My friend just called me and he has a Black Widow(Original), drilled pin below ring finger, cg and mb in line which places the mb about an 1" below and right of thumb. He is a RH'd high track/hi-rev bowler with above average speed. He had the ball drilled originally with the wh on his midplane and on val. Ball was tracking over fingers and thumb. Our pro-shop guy plugged it and moved it down and now it misses the fingers but still hits the thumb. I don't mean to be vague, but this all the info I have to go with right now.

Any suggestions? I am headed to work right now and will check for suggestions when I get a chance to log on later.

Sounds to me like the guy has a problem with his release. Does he hit holes on other balls he uses? -- JohnP

I have a ball that does that. It is a strange drill... I'm guessing it is from strange statics. I may be wrong though...

Is the fit - spans, hole sizes, bevel, pitches - any different on this ball? And what are the static weights? -- JohnP

Moving the weight-hole down and only hitting the thumb makes sense as that position would raise the bow-tie and bring the track up a bit closer to his thumb. Not sure what to say about clipping the thumb though...hmmm?

One of two posibilities IMO. He's not really a high track player and he a full roller. Or he is too high of a track for a pin down layout on a ball that flares as much as the BW.

But typically a high tracker with a pin down layout flares into the finger holes, not the thumb hole. -- JohnP

I have this problem on three balls. One of them is a trick layout ball (Girard layout on a Columbia Reaction Roll) where I didn't get the pin far enough below the thumb. But the other is an old Roto Grip Gold Grenade from the 80s, a urethane pearl, and I also regularly get the thumb on my XXXL Starburst.

The Starburst I can understand given that I'm usually throwing it straight at spares. But the Grenade is a mystery. I get the thumb but not the fingers (although I get pretty close to the fingers, too). My regular PAP is 4 over 3/8 up, and on all my resin stuff other than the Reaction Roll, I don't have this problem.

I have this problem myself. I realized that with high rev high track and pin under fingers I usually clip the middle finger hole. Turns out high track/rev bowlers will have problem with pin under layouts with roling over the finger/thumb or both. I can get away with pin in the fingers but nothing lower then that.
