"Adjustor" adjustable thumb slug
« on: January 22, 2007, 11:34:25 PM »
Looking for information on something I've heard about... I beleive it's called "adjustor", looks to be from Exactacator (sp)... Can't find it on the web, probably because I'm spelling it wrong, but I know it exists. It's clear plastic with a small screw hole that can be used to adjust it 3-4 sizes. I've seen it once, looks like a great concept. Can anyone relate experiences or point me to a web site?

Thanks in advance.

Some elderly gentleman has one in our league that uses an allen wrench to adjust. I'll see if I can take a look at it. He's been sick and out for awhile tho.

Yes, I used them for a couple of years. I loved them & the only reason I stopped using them is because my new ball driller didn't install them. It takes a special bit, & it may not justify the expense for just one customer. I had a problem only one time during a tournament I threw a shot & when the ball came back the tab was broken off. It must have hit something somehow. If you have trouble with your thumb shrinking & swelling, I would recommend trying one.

Righty - you are talking about Switch Grips, which if you had clicked the link or read that they were made by Vise you would have known that it's not what thier talking about.

I don't know... he mentioned a special bit to install it.  How many shops that you know of have a 1 7/16" drill bit, much less a 1 1/2"?

I have a 1-1/2 bit and many shops do now because of Switch Grips. However I have never in my life seen or heard of a 1-7/16 bit before. It wasn't until after you posted your reply and I clicked on the link again and realized that this product uses that. I'm surprised Vise still carries this product because it never became successful and I would honestly be surprised if they sold more than 300 in total.

There's always this product: http://www.perfectagrip.com/

I found the site the other day (thanks to a mention in the Vise forums about the guy and claims about patent infringment) and wasn't too sure what to make of the guy and his product, but it looks interesting.

O god, Arnie Goldmans product. That guy took his mom's wheelchair from her so he could use it to carry his balls during the Mini Eliminator and High Rollers a while back.

I remember a bowler that was using a product similar to what you're describing -- a thumb sleeve system that adjusted the size of the hole by twisting a screw in the bottom of the sleeve -- way back in the early 60's.  Could this possibly be the same system?  --  JohnP

No, you're wrong. I was talking about the 1 7/16 bit which a lot of pro shops don't use. I've never used switch grips. Sorry, maybe I was not clear enough.

There is also Grip-loc

http://grip-loc.com/

You only need an 1 3/8" bit to install these and they now have oval interchangable inserts available as well.

My personal $.02....

Stay away from the Grip-Loc!! I just sunk $70 into supplies and $70 into drilling to find out that they have lousy tolerances, move in my thumb, and are a huge pain to install. For me.... much better options out there...

lefty50,  Been using and installing these for 3 years. Yes they occasionally have some tolerance issues, but not often. You must have gotten one of the few. Issues mostly have been that the inner (changeable part) Can be slightly oversize in diameter...certain sizes and colors. The inner insert can also sometimes be a bit too long protruding out the bottom of the outer sleeve that goes into the ball. This will bottom out against the bottom of the hole and will not turn properly to lock. I check these before trying to put in ball and buzz off a bit off the bottom.  Urethane plug material can be somewhat strange at times during the cure process. I have talked to the people at Griploc, we have a good working relationship. Believe me , he wants his customers to be happy and would make it right. Where are you located? I would be glad to help you also. This product has been great for myself and all my customers. It is worth the occasional quirk.

Like Al stated, its not a perfect world out there but the Griploc product is a very good product.
If you have some issues, let me know how I can help.
