They put this pattern down for some of the locals to try one night, newer wood lanes, good condition.

The only guy who really had any area was using a big blue pearl, sanded to 1500, pin over the bridge, mb swung out in the track. He is a normal 3/4 tweener, 16-17 mph, and was playing a slight swing from 10 out to 5 or 6. Strange drill (at least i've never seen it), but he was bowling significantly better than everyone else, and he is not that much better than everyone else.

Hope this helps...

Stanski,

I think he just about took the core out of the ball's reaction.

Lonce,  good luck! No swing area until the 4th or 5th game of the block!

Generally on a tougher shot (flat oil), I like to use control-type layouts.  With the higher volues of oil on the US Open shot, you probably would be best off using something to start up earlier, and maybe even a particle cover.  My favorite layout for this type of shot is a 2" pin to PAP placement... this gives an earlier movement...arc-type reaction, but isn't real jumpy on the backends.  As far as surface, it depends on your rev rate and the actual ball.  I've always had good luck with ebonite matte finish (roughly 1500 grit matte).

I don't think the layout will help you on the Open pattern.  It's flat...hard....and pretty much impossible until the later games.  Just use something you are comfortable with and can control and try to not hook the ball too much in the beginning.  Your mistakes will be horribly compounded the more you try to hook it in the beginning.

Good Luck

I doubt it was the drill pattern then that was helping him score. More likely he just got a few more breaks than everyone else and was just better on that day. I think you probably gave the right idea, straight and hard. I saw some guys trying to swing it, and they were the ones leaving all the nasty splits.

I have about 5 guys bowling this tournament for my high rev players I drilled a few Storm XXX-tremes with 5-6" PAD, MB 3-4" away near VAL and 2" above midline with a surface of 500-800 grit. we tries it out a similar shot and the ball was smooth coming out of the pattern. It seemed that you had to play slots or really straight on this pattern now i'm looking for layouts so when they break down.
