Allowable span deviations
« on: September 12, 2005, 07:07:36 AM »
What is the "allowable" deviation in a span that would be considered right on.  For example, if my ring finger span is 4 11/16 what would be considered the norm plus or minus (1/64, 1/32, 1/16????).  I just measured 4 of my balls and got 4 11/16, 4 21/32, 4 21/32 and 4 19/32.  Thanks....JS

I would call a 1/16 acceptable.  Most people aren't going to notice a 1/16.  I would rather it be a 1/16 short versus long.

I agree with Andrew that most bowlers can't feel 1/16" difference in span.  I purposely drilled one of my balls 1/16" shorter than the others and couldn't tell the difference.  But a good driller should be able to get within 1/32".  --  JohnP

It depends on the bowler.

I’m with the rest that 1/16” is generally undetectable by most bowlers.

But I know a few who can feel 1/32” difference. Norm Duke is one of them.

1/16 is off, I'm not happy with that for my customers.  I can feel 1/16.  1/32 is okay, but I think many people can feel 1/16.  Bevel will usually fix the problem.  More than 1/16 is NOT okay.

Greg T, do you have that much deviation for your customers also?  If so, the price you mentioned charging as cheap as it is, is too high.  Just my 4 cents....

I can feel 1/32" off, BUT thumb hole beveling makes more a difference in "FEEL" than 1/32" - 1/16" off.
