Max-Y drill
« on: January 12, 2008, 01:49:44 AM »
Anyone know about this.  I am looking into trying it as a way to get a cleaner release.  Anyone have any thoughts, or success stories to tell?

THX!!

Dead, Ric, let me take an opposing viewpoint.

The man asked a question. He deserves an answer. For those of us who haven't drilled 14,000 balls, nor play with the pros weekly, the experimentation, the search to learn, all of it is goodness. All of it shows a desire to learn. To give a pat answer like "forget it, it's your timing...". Come on, you guys can be more helpful than that. How about "the answer is X, but my past experience indicates Y. If you want to try it, here's the way".
Tell me, what would be wrong with that?

Time out gang!  Thanks lefty50!  He is right, I'm sure I have some timing problems, and need to work them out, but I also just had some surgery that seems to have affected my release.  Balls that I was able to come out clean are hanging up.  May be just a pitch change needed, but I heard about this "offset" grip as a way to relieve some of this.  It sounded like it might help.  Sometimes things are simpler than the "physics" we want to add to the equation.  I have spoken to my driller who has been doing it for a looooong time, and I am going to go in with a few slugs and play with some different pitches until I can get back what I lost!  Thx for all the input.  Also don't worry  I appreciate the "point blank" honesty from all of you.  I have been on this sight for years, and it amazes me how people can take honest opinions personal but, lefty50 has a point!  Some of the new bowlers ask questions because they don't know, not to get knocked down.  The MaxY is supposed to be a patented drill, and before I shelled out good money to ship a ball, etc, I thought there might be something else similar.  I see there is, just by a different name!  Thanks again!!

I had Cubital Tunnel which is basically the ulnar nerve which controls the ring and pinky finger being trapped "pinched" in the funny bone area.  The surgery was to relocate the nerve to the inside of my elbow, under a muscle.  It was causing me to drop a lot of balls after a game or so.  I had the surgery on August 22, 2007, and was in a cast for 4 weeks, and had about 2 weeks of therapy.  While I still have some tingling and numbness in those fingers due to the fact it will take at least a year for the nerve to regrow, I have had some good game and bad in the past few months I've been back.  Maybe the flexion in the ring finger is not what it was, I don't know, I just seem to have a hard time getting a consistent release.  I throw a couple good balls, and then have one hang up.

Also, no offense taken!  You are right, in my haste to get some info, I guess I was guilty of what happens a lot on this forum...lack of info!  Thanks again!  Also, I noticed several bowlers, including pros that have the thumb drilled off center of grip.

Remember, please, span dictates pitch, not visa-versa. Make sure, after the surgery, that the span is still correct, then adjust pitches around that.

BrunsRicOH's statement is correct, and I agree that pitch changes can't correct an improper span.  I would add that in addition to spans, thumb pitches are dependent on flexibility and thumb hinge angle.  I read too many posts here that talk about what affect (for example) 1/4 right pitch has on the release.  The affect it has on bowler A, who has a flexible thumb that hinges strongly to the right is completely different than the affect on bowler B whose thumb is stiff and hinges more to the left.  A good fitter "reads" the hand to determine the proper pitches to use.  --  JohnP
