Might be a stupid question, but why don't you just use a vented slug? I make my own & it's very simple requiring no hole to be drilled in the ball. Just curious.

I could, but not everyone uses a slug. Also, debris or sludge from ball resurfacing can get crammed into the run channel. I tend to use 5 min epoxy for slugs all the way around, to insure a solid installation.
