Very good bowler...paddle thumb
« on: December 09, 2006, 02:31:13 PM »
A good bowling friend of mine(just averaged about 240 for near 10 practice match games) has an interesting thing goin on.

He's got paddle thumb.  An oval thumb in a tight round hole with tons of rubbing on both sides..now thumb is shaped like a paddle!

As long as we've known him he's been a bowler with a very free swing, nice speed and wonderful body posture! But never really seemed to get a ton of rotation or release.

Lately he's made some tweaks adding a little oval to his urethane slug.
It seems he's getting more sauce on the ball...with less effort.

I just dcan't imagine bowling as well as he does and has with the rubbing on both sides of my thumb.

Is this caused by a thumb hole that is too tight or a round hole when the bowler needs an oval?

It appears from the next to last picture and from the bowler I saw that it is caused when an oval thumb is placed into a round hole where the hole is near correct from front to back in size but TIGHT from side to side.

At least in my friends case(he didn't like to use much tape in the front and back).

His ball driller ovaled slightlyl and widened the hole on his sides.  The other alternative is to use a round hole (that is wide enough side to side(not rubbing on sides) and then use enough tape in the front and back to take up the extra space in this now wider round hole!

Stop here, forget about the tape in back of hole and insert Magic Carpet in the back of the hole. If then a bit loose, then add a piece or so of tape to front of hole until you get the desired tightness.

If he used a round hole big enough to accomodate his now very wide (from rubbing)thumb...magic carpet would probably be an ideal solution for him.

I like round holes myself for my oval thumb.  I use tape but have been liking magic carpet lately if enough space in back.

I have a very fat oval thumb myself. I make the hole wide enough then tighten front and back with tape. Works well for me since I like the thumbhole snug, lets me adjust to swelling without having to worry about the sides of thumb.

I have this condition as well.  A couple of years ago, I went to the factory ovaled thumb sleeves.

The thumb hasn't changed at all since I did this.  It hasn't gone down, but it hasn't gotten any worse either.  The "paddle" effect for me is caused by large calluses built up on either side of my thumb from the friction.

Every time I take a shower or bath I make sure and scrape the "loose" top layer of the calluses off to maintain them at a constant size.

P.S.  I have a friend who has this.  He actually takes 320 grit sandpaper and sands down the calluses on his thumb.  Sounds crazy, but we see him doing it all the time at the center.  Oh well, works for him.

I am somewhat like this, i will use a tight round hole then oval out the sides, I first put jsut my index finger iin then the thumb and see that rub spot, then do the same with just my ring finger and thumb, typically there is an area at like 10 and 4 that i oval out a slight bit.  this way i maintain the front to back fit, then accomplish the side to side fit
