thumb pitch question

If someone is having pain on a certain area of their thumb do you change the pitch towards the part of the thumb their having the pain or do you pitch it away?

that formula works for ME.

I have not tried it on others.

REgards,

PS I usually place most at their anatomically correct setting for lateral.

Lucky, i'm just not sure what my anatomically correct setting is for my hand/thumb lateral pitch.  I don't really understand that Coke bottle test.  I can grab the bottle differently and still feel comfortable.  So I think for me it's best to just use trial and error to get it right.

I thought I had my grip all figured out!

I have a black hammer urethane that i'm going to use as my experiment for trying out some different pitches ect...  Maybe I can perfect my grip for the last time!

My grip is a work in progress.
A few years a ago, an old school driller had me in a stretched span and the thumb was around 1/4 reverse and 1/8 right (into the palm). I made a few small changes before I began drilling my own (mostly just in the span because IT HURT!). However, since drilling my own, I have continued making small changes, and each time it feels better. I am currently at 1/2 forward and 1/4 left (away from palm). My hand is not any different today than it was a few years ago. The ball feels better in my hand now than it ever did, and my rev rate has gone up without hitting up on the ball. My thumb is what I would consider "very flexible" (for whatever it's worth).

I know it's against most line of thought, but I have to have Left Lat, thumb just rubs to much not to. I think most would feel better if they had more left lat. JMO.

Roger a couple years ago I tried lateral away from the palm and it rubbed the crap out of my thumb.  It just hurt to much to roll the ball with that lateral pitch.

I'm at 3/16 under palm lateral and it's a tad bit too much I think.  I'm going to try 1/16 under palm or 1/8 under.  I think that will be good for me.

Now im going to continue my experiment with a new grip.  I have an old black urethane hammer that i'm going to use for the experiement.  Hopefully I can come up with a really good grip.  Not saying my current grip is bad but would like to see if a more relaxed grip could be better?

Maybe I put more into the flexibility of the thumb, I'm old, thumb just doesn't bend the way it did years ago, but for me left is a must. I've changed a few customers to more left and they say it 'feels more natural', but again, the flexibility is the biggie.

Over the past year also had more go to more reverse in the pitch ( under ) and they say, they feel better. I hate to make just one change, but it ALL depends on the thumb/fingers flexibility, swelling or not and skin.

Good Luck on the changes. IMO, you have to make a change every now and then. Your joints change, swelling/no swelling happens and if you don't keep up with the changes you'll hurt in the end.

I got a chance to talk with Ron Clifton about foward thumb pitch.  He explained it very well.  I'm taking one of my bowling balls back to the pro-shop to have the thumb pitched changed to 3/8 foward.  I'm going to report back and tell how it works.

Thanks Ron.
