Regarding the Vise It, Are the drill bits actually 1 1/4" and 1 3/8" or are they the diameter of the sleeve which would make me think the bits are really a little bigger? I ask because I'm wondering if I could buy the 10 pack off Buddies and get out of it quite a bit cheaper. If they are bigger I could get my 1 3/8" bit that I never use taken down to the dia for the 1 1/4 slug. Any thoughts on this approach?

To fit the intial Sleeve the bit used is a 1-5/16. Then the top sleeve is glue in. Then the bottom piece is put in then your 1-1/4 slug screws in.

I have the VISE IT system in my pro shop and it is IMHO the best out there. The system is sold as a kit and should be used that way. There are a lot of specialty tools included with the kit that you can't get elsewhere.
The bits are 1/16 inch larger to allow for the sleeve. The sleeve is necessary so that the IT slug will rotate freely. If you do not allow for this, the slug will not rotate freely and the slug will stick.
The number 1 thing that must happen with the VISE IT system is that the slug MUST rotate freely prior to installing the Ball -IT safety molly.

How long does this process take? Drilling, glueing, recutting the sleeve and slugs to match radius? How much of an adder is this to the ball drilling charge?

im wondering whats the cost of installing VISE IT
the proshop that installs switch grip covers 30 for 1 outer an two inners

A local shop quoted me $30 for the initial setup of drilling the thumbhole with the mechanism, and a new IT slug. It would be cheaper if I just needed the mechanism in a ball by itself.

Moon, I wouldn't recommend making your bit smaller to do this, won't be very precise AND when you buy the kit, the install bit(s) come with a stopper ala the Switch Grip so that the depth is precise every time. This is important. Also, you want this depth in case you get a ball drilled somewhere else for some reason, and they install the IT, it will be the same depth as the balls you have currently.
SpareK, putting the system into a ball is dead easy, and just as fast or faster than the Switch Grip. Drilling the slug will take about the same time if you bought the kit or shop bought the kit, maybe a little longer. I would think install labor would be similar to a Switch Grip.
This system is very nice. I loved the Switch Grip, but the IT is better. Very solid in the ball, switches out just as easily. No worries about breakage. If anyone can break one, it would be me. I think my super tight thumb holes helped me break many Switch Grips. Don't think I CAN break one of these.

I wouldn't try and reduce the 1 3/8" bit to 1 5/16 myself. I would have a shop that sharpens carbide drills do it. The thing is I drill my own stuff and buying the whole kit is a waste of money for me. I only need 4 slugs at most and then the ability to install the top sleeve and the ball it molly. This system seems to be the best out of the ones i have looked at. Too bad there wasn't a smaller kit for people who just drilled for themselves.

Well, if you wanna be cheap and do a half-ass job, then go for it. When you ruin most, if not all your equipment, at least you'll have saved a few bucks. The IT system is not that expensive if your looking into it as a long term investment. It also requires numerous tools that you will not have lying around your garage. Not to mention, good luck drilling the slug with no jig to hold it. And like many have already said, the depth has to be precise on every ball, this is why the bit has a stop on it. Either have a pro shop do it, or invest in the kit and charge your friends to make your money back.

Not a rip in any way but the "IT" is a precise piece of bowling equipment. Right now it sounds like a disaster coming up and I hope not a negitive piece on how bad the "IT" system is! I do not think you will hear a negitive from any Pro Shop that offers the "IT" system!!!
