Vise IT & the Columbia Titanium cores
« on: August 08, 2011, 07:53:40 AM »
I recently picked up a nib Columbia 300 Renegade Titanium. I use the Vise IT system, and my driller told me that because he has to drill deeper for the Vise IT that he would be drilling into the "metal." He told me that another person came in with  a Titanium core ball to drill for the IT and that he tried to drill it and it messed up his bit and it didn't work.  I decided not to drill it yet--which would mean drilling it without the It and just a regular permanent thumb slug hoping I could find a way to have the thumb hole drilled for the IT.  There is a machine shop not too far from me that specializes in metals , I may go to there to see if they could / would drill the hole for me--if they are unable, anyone else have any suggestions??

Thanx,

Brad

bcw,  those cores had a "ceramic" core.   They are drillable, but the bit has to hit the core at 90 degrees.  Slightest deviation and the bit will wander.  I agree with your driller, leave that core alone

Actually, I was able to find a machine shop not all that far away and they are going to drill that hole. They had lots of other projects in line first but they are going to get to my ball next week.

I agree with bullred. I hit the core of a BOSS or something of the sort, and my whole drill press starting jumping around and the bit about jumped out of the press. Stay away!
