I was reading Walter Ray's Q & A's on his website, and saw that he told one fan that he has all of his balls drilled label, and just changes the reaction based on hand position and ball speed. Would an arsenal of different coverstocks and cores etc all with the same drilling really provide the same range of potions as the same balls with different layouts?

Reality Is.......Working out how to carry the 10, only to start leaving the 7.

There is no way all of Walter's ball are drilled label.

I've crossed next to Walter in a regional before and bowled against him in match play. From what I can tell, yes they are.

Mo told us at a seminar that most were drilled flip leverage and then just tweaked the surface

I'm not saying he doesn't use a lot of label balls. I assume he does when he is playing to the right. However, I would be very suprised if he was using label balls when he is playing left of 20.
And I didnt mean my first response as an "attack" in any way. It was more of my opinion and I could be wrong.

Yeah man, he does. Walter is sooooo talented with his hand, he can do things like that. Trust me, I''ve seen it and its amazing. If I did that, my ball would be doa at 30 feet.

With as little hand as he has and how up the back he is, I don't think drillings really make a big difference for him, just drill it to hook and let him go strike with it.

Just another hack with too much equipment.

Keep in mind if you take one pattern like over label(which is still very broad in terms) and drill it on 4 different bowling balls you will have four similar but different reactions based on the ball cover and what it is designed to do.
Say all were drilled cg in the palm and pin just below the right ring finger and your arsenal was
Brunswick Siege, a Wildthing, a Python, and a Avalanche solid.
All four balls would have similar looks but with different break points, roll, ect.
Siege would hook over all the most and roll soonest.
Then the Wildthing would be much cleaner through the heads with more snap on the end.
Then the Python would do about the same as the wildthing but with tamer back ends.
Then the Avalanche solid would probably roll sooner then the Python but with a smoother less snappy backend.
It would be a complete arsenal where you could play the same area and make very little adjustments with speed or hand and change balls as the lanes got drier and keep near the same line.
The balls would be drilled to react the same, but the covers(along with the balls characteristics) would give them all a little different reaction from rolling early to more length.
It is a great idea if you like a certain pattern and try it on two different kinds of bowling balls, say one solid and one pearl. They give you two very similar looks that you can use on different lane conditions.

Also Walter can put some hand in the ball. He has decent revs even though most of the time he comes out of the back of the ball.
Plus he has some speed on it playing outside.

You have to see WRR in person to appreciate how much he actually puts on the ball. You can't tell by watching him on TV. -- JohnP

Last Year in Hammond Indiana when Walter won, he was using a ball that Mo Drilled for him. It was an Ntense Lev RG drilled with Mo's double thumb layout. With this drilling it took the Diff. number from .056 to over .100 for that ball.

Why are we even mentioning WRW's rev rate on here? His ball rotates like the average league player but he can repeat his shot and knows how to take advantage of his look when it's on the lanes.

John, I have seen WRW numerous times in person. I guess it's all relative to how the person watching throws the ball. If my ball turned over like WRW's, it would think it was on vacation. LOL
This question asked in this thread is whether or not you think an arsenal with all label drillings can do as much as an arsenal with different drillings.
-
layout count 10% or something like that so you figure

He can make up that 10% with his hand

This is coming from a typical league bowler, but what works for me is:
I buy 2 of the same ball each season, drill them the same and adjust the covers.
No need to have x number of balls if you just bowl a league shot. I love watching these guys come in with 8 ball rollers for the same shot for 32 weeks, its laughable.
A little harder, a little softer, a little more hand, a little less. If you are actually decent enough of a bowler with decent physical skills, you only need a couple of balls to do the trick.
Again, this is for the typical league shot.
it all depends...you have to put into consideration on who you are bowling against...what kind of equipment(solid, pearl) where they are playing if there are 7 out of 10 players ripping the same line and you have 2 virtual gravities and you rip the ball...by mid 2nd game your ball is going to do nothing but roll out bcus everyone is going to make the same adjustments as you...and if you have a polished VG the ball is going to hit that dry breakpoint the other 6 bowlers burned into the lane. then what do you do?

Mr Straight Ball -- Your "average league bowlers" must have a lot more hand than ours (~165 average). And sorry if I pulled the thread off topic. -- JohnP

Steve Jaros and Tim Criss are two big proponents of same drilling layout on multiple balls and adjusting balls with surface and polish to get the reaction they are looking for, just as Walter Ray is too.
