I have a lot of balls that I have bought used and such and I want to make sure that they are legal for competition. Are there any methods of getting a general finding without using the pro shop scale? Obviously it wont be as effective but I wanted to know if anything I had was obviously illegal. Thanks

Anything with the CG more than 1" past the grip center and no weight hole is suspect. The CG high near the fingers or low by the thumb without a weight hole is suspect. Of course, that's assuming normal top weights which you probably don't know on a used ball. Low top's might be OK in those positions, but high top weight balls would have to keep the CG pretty close to the grip center if there's no weight hole. The only way to be sure is to visit a pro shop.

Strider's explanation is good, except that a good driller will remove excess finger or thumb weight by drilling the fingers or thumb extra deep. I've removed as much as a full ounce of finger weight this way. And you can remove smaller amounts of side weight by drilling one finger deeper than the other one. So I would say that weighing the ball on a dodo scale is the only way to know if it's legal. -- JohnP

Strider stated that CG placement will cause the layout to be 'suspect'. This is a good explanation of CG placement for most bowlers.

Closer inspection of the ball (i.e. finger hole depth or thumb hole depth) by someone with knowledge of layouts and static weights would be required to determine whether the ball is close to legal or not. And of course, the local pro shop with a calibrated dodo scale is the preferred method of determining actual static weights.
