best way to lay out arsenal?

What do you guys feel is the best way to lay out an arsenal of 5 balls?  How many layouts?

There are many philosophies on this topic.I like Denny Torgerson's ideas in the latest issue of Bowling This Month(August).I am currently building a six ball arsenal for unknown conditions based on his ideas.Basically,you drill six balls all at your favorite pin distance(he helps you determine what that might be)three at 75 degrees and three at 45 degrees.Two are particle,two are strong reactive,and two are entry level reactive.You should be able to hit most conditions with this combination.I have tried the idea of having all different pin distances in different coverstocks at different degrees in different surfaces.It gets confusing.The article is great,you should get it if you don't already subscribe.

Saw a Frankie May video once, if I remember right he said a 5 ball is about the best. 5 different covers, but if I remember, he only used 3 layouts, different on the top and bottom of his group. I'm not sure if he was counting a spare ball in that mix, just been to long since I saw the video.

Not much help, but maybe someone else saw it and can remember more than I can.

I have giving much thought to this topic myself.  After talking with a very good bowler my eyes opened a little more.  Basically the most important part of a balls reaction is the cover.  Layouts come second.

Matching the cover with the condition is paramount.  So with this idea picking many different layouts in an arsenal may just get way to confusing.  I like the idea of using the same pin distance for all equipment and changing MB placement and or degrees.

Personally for me I have gone the route of just using two different layouts on all of my equipment.  I like stacked leverage with an x-hole.  I also like pin above the bridge(5.5" from pap) cg kicked right to 1oz and no x-hole.

So for a 6 ball arsenal I would just drill three stacked leverage and three with the length/back end layout.  I'm going to keep things simple and practice on my game.  I figure using the same 2 layouts I will get to REALLY know the reactions.

Thanks for replying to my post.  If anyone else would like to chime in that would be great.  I would love to read everyone elses approach.

With the cores of todays equipment being so strong the only thing I find to make a difference is the coverstock so as of the last year I have drilled all of my equipment basically the same 4 x 5 with a slight variation in pin placement(higher-lower) and let the cover stock do the work telling me which ball to use it has simplified the game making it infalable to choose what I need to throw on what condition and scores/average just keeps on improving do to increased consistancy/confidence knowing what ball to use and how it is going to react.
