Weigh Hole
« on: December 22, 2009, 03:17:34 AM »
I got a couple of balls that just get down the lane a little farther than I would like, where shoudl I place an extra hole to remove some finger weight and maybe let them get into a roll a few feet sooner?

Thanks in advance
James

First thing I would try get the ball to roll sooner is a surface change.

If you put a hole up to help remove finger weight it will actually reduce the balls reaction. You can drill the fingers deeper to hopefully move the static weight to the thumb side. This will allow you to put a hole down and it will increase the reaction.

Also remember if you put a hole in your PAP it will reduce your balls reaction.

Like I said before I would start with a surface change first.

I did that first, I hit the first flares with a 1000 pad, but still had a little too much length for the reason I wanted to use the ball. I weighed it up and see that I have 7/8ths finger in both of them.

As Rick has ALREADY mentioned....statics weights, i.e. finger weight, is not what is pushing the ball down the lane too far. How far is the pin from your PAP? How much separation is there between the flare rings?
If the pin is too far from your PAP, the core is not creating enough flare or the flare rings are too tight and the ball is rolling over oil for most of the lane, creating too much length.
Surface dictates length first and foremost. Flare allow for more overall 'hook' potential.

If 1000 didn't help try 500.  If you keep going coarser in grit eventually you'll hit the length you want.  --  JohnP
