Weight hole positions in relation to dynamics?
« on: February 10, 2010, 12:12:13 AM »
So I`ve read through Mo`s Gradient Line Balance Hole document and completely understand that strategy to help fine tune ball reaction.  However, if one wishes to enhance their ball reaction but already is at or close to 1oz positive finger weight, and they do not wish to drill the fingers deeper or anything like that, where would you place the x-hole?  I remember reading some time ago that placing the weight hole 1 inch inside or past the bowler`s PAP on the midline will enhance the dynamic properties of the ball.  Is this true?

Will the Gradient Line Balance Hole procedure also apply to a line drawn between the PAP and the pin?

I believe Bwick used to advocate 1" past the PAP, 1" hole, 3" deep.

The gradient line balance hole is from your pap and mb, whether it's a asymmetrical or symmetrical/marked or unmarked mb! The pap indicates the P1 location and the mb indicates the P4 location, the P2 and P3 are equidistance from the other two locations/P1 & P4! These locates are for the location in the core/weight block where you're removing weight. If you reverse it and go from pap to pin then you're drilling weight out of the top of the core/weight block, which shorten it so you're actually lowering the differential increase of raising it. If you look at Mo's chart, you can actually create a higher mb even in a symmetrical weight block by the location of the weight hole. I place weight holes on a line from the grip center, through the cg, 1" past the val and try to keep it at least 3-3/8" from the pin so I'm drilling more out of the side of the core/weight block. Please place a double piece of tape in the location where you're going to drill and roll the ball to make sure it's not going to hit the hole. Depending on the track and the ball flare, this will make sure of the flare before you place a hole in the ball to make sure you have enough room. Good luck to you, Bruce

Will placing the weight hole 1" inside of the PAP (closer to the center of grip) increase dynamics?

No. It will decrease the flare. Going 1" past the pap will increase the dynamics slightly, but like the previous poster said you must watch that you don''t flare over the x-hole.

If you go within an inch around the PAP it shouldn't effect overall dynamics. If you are trying to not exceed finger weight, just do not go below the midline.
To see a change in reaction, I would recommend going at least 2 1/4" from the PAP as well as drilling the balance hole at least 2 1/2" deep.
