weight hole question
« on: February 22, 2007, 07:45:23 PM »
hey just a quick q...if i want to put a flare-increasing weight hole in my scorchin inferno, i put it 2 1/4" past my axis point from the pin right? my question is this, how do i avoid flaring over the weight hole. i'm not positive that i will, just wondering, would it still increase the flare if i only went like an inch past my axis? thanks in advance.

You can also place the x-hole under your PAP - this relatively increases top weight and should be in a flare-safe position, even if you have a strong drilling and lots of revs.

I would like to see more info on this as well, I have a Terminaotr that i am waiting to put a weight hole in because it has illegal side weight but I want to know more about where to put them first.

and before anybody says this, yes I have watched Brunsnicks weight hole video.

a weightole on your positive axis point will cause the ball to roll up sooner

a weighthole between your positive axis point and your grip will remove top and side weights allowing the ball to react smoother and will flare less

a weighthole past your positive axis point will increase backend reaction and length caused by more flare

Just as you could pitch a thumbhole, so could the weighthole be pitched.

Pitching the weighthole away from the palm preserved more top weight in the ball thus enhancing the backend and the hit of the ball.

Pitching the hole towards the palm caused the ball to lose more topweight and thus making a smoother reaction.

Pitching towards the thumb will cause more length and a sharper backend reaction. Pitching towards the fingers will have an opposite effect.

The current way of thinking if you are strictly worried about getting the ball back within the legal ABC limits is to place the weighthole at the intersection of a line drawn from the grip center, through the CG to the vertical axis line. A hole placed here will stand a 95% chance of getting the ball back within the limits.

quote:
if you pitch your weighthole
drilling a 1 1/4 hole pitched will oval the opening
causing a 1 1/4 x 1 3/8 hole
this will be illegal wont it ?
so you will need to drill a smaller hole
is this right ?

daniel

I wasn't aware of a maximum hole size. Alos, 1 1/4 hole is super large. The best way for a hole to be effective,IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO FINE TUNE, is to make the hole at least 2.5" deep. I prefer 3" deep holes.  A 3" deep 1 1/4" hole would remove nearly 3 ounces of weight. I've never drilled a ball needing that much removed.

Maximum size balance hole allowed by USBC is 1 1/4" and yes if you pitch a 1 1/4" balance hole it does make it larger and would be disallowed.  I have seen this happen at the nationals more than once.

Okay, so as I said. The mose effective weight hole is 2.5" to 3" deep. a 1 1/4" hole of that depth will remove nearly 3 ounces of weight. It's not rocket science. Use a smaller hole.
