Drilling Beginner
« on: March 26, 2012, 04:41:07 AM »
So, I'm going to be learning how to run the pro shop at the bowling alley I've been going to for the entire 22 years of my life.

Just curious if there is any advice anyone would like to give before I jump into this endeavor. I've been trying to read up on the dual angle method, but until I actually dig in and start...I don't think I'm going to understand jack squat on that one.

If anybody knows the place, it's Playland Lanes in Miami, Oklahoma.

Have fun, take your time, and learn from your mistakes. Be patient as well. Measure twice, drill once.

It is a lot to learn so don't get discourage.

Powerhouse and Kegel both run schools.  They are about a week long.

I suggest attending one of these schools to learn how to become a pro-shop owner.

Hopefully you have someone that is familiar with use of your drill press, plugging techniques, etc.  First learn everything you can from that person.  Then attend one of the classes already mentioned.  IMO, the dual angle layout method is the best for matching a layout to a customer's game.  Here's a link to the method:

You'll want to read through it several times, then try drawing a few layouts on an undrilled ball.  Success of this method is based on understanding the short section at the very end of the procedure, titled "The effective use of DUAL ANGLE Layouts".

Finally, here's a link to the index of the layout section of the wiki at bowlingchat.net.

Be sure to read the information on gradient line balance holes and the double thumb layout, and there's a LOT more good information also.  --  JohnP

Awesome, thank you guys. I'm not actually taking it over, guess I should have cleared that up in the first post. What's going on is the owner is getting swamped every now and again and I offered to learn and help. Plus it's been something I've wanted to learn for a while.

I'll definitely be going through the posts you linked up. And how much are those classes?

With the pictures and a broken-down simple explanation this makes the dual angle much simpler, for me at least.

I tried to find a price for the 5 day Powerhouse (Ebonite) seminar, but apparently they don't put on their website.  Here's the best I could do.  --  JohnP
