Layout Question
« on: February 07, 2007, 06:32:55 AM »
Alright, I need some help from you pro shop guru's out there.  I have basically no knowledge on how balls are laid out.  I have an old Storm El Nino Gold that I use as my bench mark ball.  This ball has a great roll for me in medium oil conditions, but does not hook as much as I would like in the heavier conditions my house has been laying out lately.  This ball is very predictable on how it will react.  Here is a photo of the layout.

Last year I purchased a brand new Brunswick Scorchin Inferno as a ball I could use when the oil pattern gets heavier.  Now it seems as though my El Nino Gold hooks more in oil than the Scorchin Inferno. and I am wondering if the layout is the cause.  Below is a phot of the Scorchin Inferno Layout.  There is a piece of black tape indicating the CG Punch

From what I do understand about ball layouts, the El Nino Gold should not out hook the Scorchin.  Can any of you please help me understand these layouts, and why the El Nino Gold does better on heavier conditions than the Scorchin?  I am considering buying a new agressive ball and would like to know how I should request the set up.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Both are drilled very similar. Do you clean your balls after you've used them?

Give us your PAP location, axis tilt, and the pin to PAP distances for the two balls and we can give you a much better analysis.  --  JohnP

Copied from your same topic in the Brunswick forum:

Poxy--

I'm sure others will have better answers for you, but I wouldn't be surprised if what you call heavy really isn't heavy. From what I understand the Scorchin needs true heavy oil to really produce in OOB condition. Now, if what you are bowling on is really medium or medium-heavy, the Scorchin may be burning up. I have a guy on my team that throws this year's PBA Inferno (a Scorchin'), and I've been telling him its just too much ball. He doesn't understand why the ball seems to die out on him, when it's for heavy oil. He figures that means it hooks more than anything else. But if there isn't enough oil, the Scorchin uses too much energy in the early part of the lane and will be dead before it hits the pins. Also, even though it's a heavy oil ball, that doesn't mean it covers a ton of boards. It just means it can grip the lane and get into a roll better. I've found that heavy oil balls often cover a lot LESS boards than you would expect, they're usually smoother and not snappy in the back like many medium pieces. Hope that helps!

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

If you want some answers you need to include some things about your style.

What's your rev rate?  If you don't know then give us an idea.

What's your ball speed?  If you don't know give us a close guess(fast, med, slow)

How far is the pin from your pap?

See these are important questions.  I have a decent amount of revs.  A lot of times stronger pin placements will not hook as much as weaker ones for me.  That's because they flare so early and layoff on the backend.  I use stronger pin placements on stronger bowling balls for control.

Have you tried to dull the surface on your scorching?  This may help find out if it's burning up.  If it hooks less after dulling it then you know it's burning up.

I am going to go down to the proshop tonight to see if they can show me where my PAP is on both balls as well as axis tilt and pin to PAP distance.  I would say that my rev rate is low to medium.  My ball speed is probably in the medium range.  When I go down there I am planning to practice, and maybe I can shoot a couple of videos with my digital camera.  I'll post my specific measurements tonight.  Thanks for the feedback so far!
