Thinking about going to a forward pitch
« on: February 10, 2007, 04:30:45 AM »
For those that have had a 0 pitch and went to a forward pitch, what are the benifits or downsides? I want to be able to keep the ball in my hand without having to put 3 peices of tape in the thumbhole on every ball. I tried the switchgrip at 0 degrees and still have the tendency of grabbling it from time to time even thought I'm much better then I used to be.Also, I have a short and small thumb with tends to rest naturally more towards the palm of my hand and is not very flexible going backwards.
If I was to do this, how much should I go to make much of a difference but not too much. I was thinking of 1/4 forward. I guess worse case is I can have the slug taken out and put it back to 0 or an 1/8 forward.

I'm currently working on increasing my "forward" pitch on my thumb.  I used to be 3/4 reverse, the two balls I drilled today are now 3/8 forward on the thumb.  I have spans of 4 11/16 and 4 3/4.  If anything, it's made me relax my swing and hand so that I can release it correctly.  I also went from 1/4 forward to 3/8 reverse on the fingers, but went back to 0 on the fingers because I can't catch the ball on the bottom of my swing like I want.  Keep in mind I'm in my late 40s and went from classic cranker in the 70s, 80s and early 90s to almost classic tweener. It's been quite a transition since I'm nowhere to be found on most THS patterns, but still can be reasonably competitive on most blended patterns (what's that??) with my goal to be more competitive on THS and other stupid easy patterns.  Hence the changes.

I'd suggest that you make the changes GRADUALLY rather than all at one time.   It took me most of this bowling season and a lot of plugged up bowling balls to get where I'm at now.  I was on a ball staff until the end of the year, so now I'm using my free agent opportunities to make these changes.  I'd suggest taking 3-4 of the junkiest bowling balls you own or can acquire and make those gradual changes, since you'll notice differences pretty quick.

Good luck and keep us posted.
