Short pin layout
« on: February 17, 2009, 07:14:42 AM »
Little backround..Im trying somethng new, I may be wrong but please correct me if my thinking is not right. Generally most balls I use have a 3-4inch pin and recently ive been tracking almost on the thumb, its CLOSE. Oil line will catch the thumb, not bad enough that you hear anything or see the ball bounce while rolling on the thumb, but still...it seems to catch it a bit. I drilld up another ball with a shorter pin, maybe 2.5 inches? and I dont have the problem, IVe got about a solid inch or so from the thumb, and get a MUCH better reaction out of the ball  (its an NVD pin under ring finger (short pin) vs a Virtual gravity ping above bridge(longer pin)

What im wondering is using a shorter pin, if I decide to drill it pin up its going to put the cg REAL close to my insert. Wondering if this is going to hurt my reaction at all having that short pin above the bridge, or if I should stick to putting the pin under being its shorter.

Was also thinkin bout trying a RICO layout..I throw the ball hard, usually around 17.0-17.5  Decent rev rate sorry but I wouldnt know the number at all. I tend to drill most balls pin just over/under, anything that rolls later I do pin under just to get it started a little earlier due to the speed, my VG for example is pin over, duller stuff I put it over.  I know its been discussed to death but anyone wanna let me know how that rico would compare to my pin over/under drilling on something aggresive? Also does it have to be a symetrical ball for the rico layout to be used?

Pin-CG distance has nothing to do with tracking over/close to your thumb!

CG only dictates the place for an x-hole.

The reason you are experiencing may be the placement of MB. If that's closer to track, you may catch holes. Please remember that strong x-holes down your VAL will rise bowtie, thus keeping you safe from clipping holes.

If pin and MB position is in safe zone and you are still tracking over any hole, then it is most probably because of the way you release the ball.

As far as RICO, no it doesn't have to be symmetrical.
Take a look at these links: (by the way, search function is VERY handy)

well with a shorter pin the ball will flare less no? The ball with a shorter pin I use does not track on the thumb at all, I figured that was why.

No, pin-cg distance has no effect on flare potential of the ball. Rg Differential dictates how much, RG values dictate how soon the ball will "flare". You simply manipulate that total potential with a drilling (pin-PAP distance, MB-PAP distance, pin height and balance hole).

Please re-read my post, especially the part regarding possible reasons of your problem. Then check the MB location on each ball.

Also, if thumb pitches and bevel is not same on those two balls, you may be releasing different due to the timing of the clearance of your thumb. That's very common thing I come across..
