weighthole to lessen backend
« on: February 05, 2007, 03:24:54 PM »
I have a Green Gargoyle that I recently purchased. It's drilled pin above ring finger with the cg below ring finger. No weighthole presently. Statics are roughly 3/4 oz of finger and side weight and about 1 oz topweight. The ball looks great the first 2/3 of the lane but just hooks too hard in the backends for me. I took the box finish to 4000 abralon and then double coated it with Control-it. The ball is a bit better but still too strong for the oil volumes that I see. Where can I put a weight hole to calm this ball down? I was considering putting a weight hole in grip center and removing all the topweight. Thoughts?

I'd use a 3/4" bit on the PAP and take it to 1/2oz negative.  If anything it won't be nearly as violent.

DP3, How is 3/4" bit gonna take out that much weight?

louie, go 2 1/4 towards the pin from your PAP, 1" x 2" deep to start.

If you want to make the ball more stable and consistant go with DP3, if you want to reduce backend reaction go with Nick.

I know from personal experience that ball is very strong off the dry. I would try placing a balance hole maybe 3 inches out from your grip center. take a larger bit like 1 inch or so and go shallow, not too deep to start. that will make the ball smoother first.

I went with a 1 inch hole 1.5 inches deep about midway between my pin and Pap. This puts the weighthole just a bit below and an inch right of the ring finger. I don't have a scale handy so I can't tell you the statics. I'll get a chance to throw it tomorrow night and let you know how it went.

I rolled a set with the GG last night. This weighthole definately lessens the balls backend move. The GG has the same length as before, but dosen't flip as hard as before. Overall hook is diminished as well as the ball covers less boards in the last 10 feet of the lane. As a sidenote, my ring finger and pinky end up over the weight hole which feels kind of weird. Thanks to all!
