Are grips/inserts brand important?
« on: April 30, 2007, 05:34:13 PM »
Sorry I don't know where to post this particular question.

I wanted to see what kind of grips everyone uses, if any.
My pro shop carries contour grips, but I noticed alot of pros or others uses vise grips. There are so many types of vise grips, I don't know which one to try. Any suggestion? Or are grips generally the same overall?

I use contour grips golden ovals.
I like the soft tacky feel they have.
But i believe that contour grips do
not support the pba tour, therefore
you cannot use them in regional play.

I use vise grips. Powerlift on the middle finger, and ordinary flat on the ring finger. That helps me keep my track high, and not to turn the ball as much.

I have had all of the major brands and also some of the "off" brands available in our shop but have only offered "Vise" for the last 9 years. Wide varity of sizes-styles-colors and I feel the most durable without losing feel

Grips are personal thing - its a matter of feel and reaction that the bowler gets.
Determined by feeling, finger sensitivity and lift action.

Vise Grips for me are perfect: but...

I use Vise, Turbo, and Tenth Frame depending on the feeling and amount of grip/reaction on the particular ball I want to see.

Vise Grip - Medium lift (medium soft)
Turbo Grip - Strong lift (soft)
Tenth Frame - Neutral lift - least amount (medium hard)
Fine tuning the reaction and feel, if you will.
YMMV.
Vise, Turbo, Contour, and Tenth Frame are all good products, its a matter of personal preference.

Contours (I do use them) are softer than Vise Grips (I have used them) but not by a lot. I used VG with no real problems for a long while interspersed with Contours, which my pro shop carries as their standard. For consistency's sake I stuck with Contours.

One big advantage VGs have is they make them in half or in between sizes, in 64 ths of an inch.

ALso VGs are slightly larger than Contours, in the 25/32" and 3/4" sizes that I use. The VGs are also slightly longer than COntours, so my driller had to drill the hole deeper. He got that wrong a few times, but I had to remind him that I had brought different brand grip. (I supply my inserts to him.)

I agree.  I've noticed that Vise are bigger (and harder) than whatever my old driller was using (I think they were either 10th Frame or Contour), at least for my sizes - 11/16 and 21/32.  I can actually get my middle finger down to the knuckle with Vise grips.  The other grips I could only get about 3/4 of the way in, and the next size up was too big, so I've been jamming my fingers for the past 3 years!

I also prefer the powerlifts - they help those of us that are rev challenged!

Power lifts are strictly 1/4" forward pitch; they do not help with revs. You are laboring under a misapprehension. If this were true, just drill straight sided grips with 1/4" more forward pitch than you have now. The results will be IDENTICAL.

Sorry, but facts are facts, no matter how you "FEEL" about them.
