My PAP is now below the midline. I have been bowling pretty well of late, so it seems to be working for me. Is it considered a bad thing to have a down component on you PAP? What am I doing with my release that would cause this?
-
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
-
Sounds good, but I'm curious as to what causes it.
-
My track is slightly inverted also. I read somewhere that the cause is your hand is cocked during the release. Again, can't remember where I read this but it kind of makes sense.
-
mine has always been 1/4" down and I have no problems. The way I see it, it's not so much whether you are up or down, but how close you are to the midline.

Is your PAP down on all your equipment? I ask, because I had one ball(Blue Aftershock, one of my all-time favorites, I had 2 of them) that was 3/8 down, when all my other equipment was 3/8 up(same grip, similar layouts). I never could figure out why that one ball tracked inverted, when all my others didn't(I had 6 or 7 balls at that time).

Seems like it is down on all my stuff. I do use a wrist brace that I have cupped slightly.
-
The thumb clearing too quickly causes an inverted track.

Just another hack with too much equipment.

My PAP has been over and down for a long while, 4 5/8 and 3/8 down. I don't cup my wrist or rotate around to cause anything unusual that I am aware of. I do try to keep my elbow "in" and my swing "controlled" to play tighter lines so maybe I'm "muscling it" some and causing the different tilt. Most of my equipment is drilled pin under, CG kicked or RICO, as I get plenty of length out of most of my stuff. Pin over and shiny pearls go real long and "snappy" on most of the shots I see and bowl on. 2 cents worth from a mid 40's, used to be "cranker"

It happens when you clear your thumb very early and use side of your fingertips as if you are turning a doorknop counter clockwise (for a righty).
Nothing wrong with it. Usually it reacts stronger. It is very hard, almost impossible, to create an end-over-end reaction with this type of roll. Creating less axis rotation is also not very comfortable I should say..
Pete Weber has no vertical component either. Check his release. He does that to an extend..
Hope this helps,

If you checked your axis on a ball with a dynamic core and found it to be inverted I encourage you to check it again on a non-flaring ball. With a flaring ball it's easy to base the PAP on the second or third flare ring instead of the first, and if you do it will frequently come out to be inverted. I made this mistake myself several times. Check the PAP on a non-flaring ball and then mark it with white tape to confirm it and you'll have your true PAP location. -- JohnP

Just got my Venus redrilled with my new span and pitches. It is my least flaring ball, drilled with the pin above the bridge. I put tape on it and seemed to have found the axis point on it. It came out as 3 7/8 straight over. Still a bit of a low track but doesn't seem to have the down vertical component. Not sure if it's because of what JohnP said, or if my new layout is causing me to throw it different. I do feel like I'm staying more under the ball at release and not rotating the hand around the side as much.

Did you watch the tape yourself or have someone else watch it for you. You won''t pick the ball up yourself until it''s nearly to the arrows, and it will have made two or three revolutions, at least, by then. Either have someone watch it for you or video tape it. Nothing wrong with 3 7/8" straight over if your axis tilt is in a good range. -- JohnP

Agree!
In addition Lay out does not alter the PAP (at least not enough to talk about..). On the other hand, fitting and thumb hole do. If you alter the timing of your thumb clearing the ball, you will alter your axis point.
I'd be checking the span and size/pitches/bevel of my thumb hole, if I find different PAP's in different balls.

I'll have to get someone to watch/video it to see. Am picking up two more balls tomorrow, one of my old ones that was redrilled to my new specs and the other my new Nomad. That will give me 4 balls with my new specs and I'm going to stick with that for the Summer and see how things go. I do know that I'm not having pain in my hand anymore so that is a great thing! I might have been able to even go with forward pitch in the thumb, but I'm throwing it better than ever at zero and a relaxed span so I'm happy with that.
-
You could just consider this a second good reason to buy a plastic spare ball, with a pancake core. Then you'll be able to see the PAP yourself. -- JohnP
-
A very big thumbhole , half use of the thumb or reverse pitch could possibly cause this also?
-
I'm not completely sure what causes it, when I change my release to throw the ball straight my track switches to inverted, its more than an 1" difference vertically on my PAP measurement. I'll try and shoot some video next week of my release and see if I can't put something up to show an inverted release on video.
