What did I hit?
« on: December 28, 2013, 09:50:15 PM »
I drilled a Pyramid Path (plastic ball) for a beginner yesterday.  Used a simple label layout.  When I drilled the thumb hole the bit chattered like it was in dense core.  Looking in the hole I could see a triangle shaped area from the bottom of the hole to within 1/4" of the ball's surface on one side of the hole.  What was it?  I'm thinking about refusing to drill any more Pyramid balls.  --  JohnP

Wow!  Hard to know what it is without dissecting the ball.  I remember finding a screw inside a polyester ball years ago.  It was strange, and I haven't seen anything like it since, (besides the occasional air bubble)  but in today's manufacturing plants I guess it's possible for something to fall into the wrong mixture, etc...

I suppose it's possible I hit the edge of the pancake block, but I wouldn't think it would come that close to the surface of the ball.  I drilled it very slow and the bit still chattered so bad it left distinct ridges that I had to sand out.  The finger holes drilled fine.  --  JohnP

I got it, you hit a N.S.A. tracking device.  Get rid of the ball quickly!

It's gone and is now the customer's problem.  Seriously, the ball reaction was fine.  --  JohnP

I quoted my original post below, where did I say anything about metal?  It was definitely something different than coverstock or filler, and may have been the edge of the block.  I've drilled into core a lot of times without getting the chattering I got this time.  The cg was located closer to the fingers than the thumb, so a pancake block should have hit the fingers also.  The fingers drilled normally.  --  JohnP
