What do i do now!!??????
« on: January 27, 2009, 02:34:29 AM »
Im trying to decide on a layout for a ball im purchasing for a fresh shot.  Im usually comfortable with 4.5 pin to paps or greater, but I was wondering about a closer layout to smooth out the wet dry.

Typically the middle is flooded and the friction picks up as you get away from 15 board to the gutter. I favor the inside typically but i can go straighter, but im more confortable swinging as i have little more room with it.

Last time i checked my pap was like 5 over 3/8 up.  Im a high tracker, softer speed around 14 to 15, decent amount of hand.  I usually have to have pin ups or im clipping the holes.

Would a close pin to pap drill work?  What could i expect out of it?

Oh the ball i was considering was a Street Rod solid, I have to stay with the "weaker" equipment.

Based on this Brodie, I'd suggest a 2.75-3pin x 2.75-3cg with the pin 3+ above mid line.  This layout will offer you a smoother overall reaction in comparison to your longer pin from pap layouts (which should allow you to stay in the friction a little longer).  I suggest the pin higher from mid line based on your comment about clipping the gripping holes and I feel anything 2 inches or less from pap with the pin may cause you to stand up too quick and possibly roll out.

I have a couple of pieces similar to this right now and it offers me very good length but doesn't fall off a cliff when it encounters friction. Hope this helps some...

I hear ya...probably the least expensive way to try this is to plug an older weak ball to test reaction before trying it on a new piece.  Trial and error per layout is typically how we learn what will or won't work for us as bowlers.  Tricky part to this is that different cores can/will produce different reactions, that's why nothing is truly written in stone.

So i ended up getting a street rod pearl.  I had explained how in terms of reaction i wanted the ball.  So he suggested (my driller) length and smooth off the spot.

Well as he was laying it out, which I believe it is 5 and 1/4 by 4 and 1/2 im guessing here by eyeballing.  I can post up some pics later.

Well the pin is below the middle finger, and i said are you sure about this I have issues with pin below its going to track over.  He said well you track high but not that high.

So i throw it and ....thump thump thump down the lane.  Next few balls while trying to figure out the reaction, it would stand straight up and run right through the break and leave something god awful and im definitly confused now, but the thumping is consistent.  After my stellar 165 I pull it off the rack and the flare is completely over all the holes.

I mean where do I go from here!?  I told him about the pin, but I guess it fell on def ears, I dunno.

take it back and ask him why it is doing this. If he thought it would not and it did he should be willing to help fix it. I would remind him that you told him it would do this,... In a nice way of course

Are you positive you're not using a full roller release?  If you have a non-flaring ball, throw it and see where the track is.  --  JohnP

I took the ball back and they are going to replace it.

I just dont know what to lay it out at now.  Anything I throw flares alot so i have to keep the pin 5 and 1/2 or closer otherwise im thumping at the last 20 feet.

I do very well in heavier oil, its the wet dry house shots that kill me.

Bowlers with an inverted track (down vertical PAP component) are more likely to hit the finger holes than those with up components.  Your track naturally angles toward the finger holes before flare even begins.  If the bowtie is below the finger holes it's going to flare into them.  For a rough approximation of where the bowtie will be, draw a line from your PAP through the pin - the bowtie will be where that line hits the track.  A shorter pin to PAP should be OK for you as long as you keep the pin to the right of or above a line from the PAP to the ring finger hole, putting the bowtie above the level of the finger holes.  --  JohnP

I was gonna say, 5" over isn't considered a very high tracker, and sadly, if thats the information you gave your ball driller, pin under middle finger would have worked well. But he should have known when you mentioned clipping the fingers, that your pap specs were wrong. If I were you, I'd drill more stuff pin way up, and bring the cg/mb way out towards the val if not past. That will get the ball down lane, but still get it to induce earlier revs with the mb position, thus killing some of the backend. Other things to do is to keep the pin right of the fingers and level with or above them.
