What do you think?
« on: August 13, 2008, 02:59:07 AM »
I'm going to be getting my T-Road Pearl plugged and redrilled.  I'm looking to fill a different gap with it, and that's of a smooth rolling piece.  I'm going to be drilling it pin on axis, or really close to that.  What would you rather do, and why?  1 inch pin to PAP?  2 inches?  3? On the midline, above, or below?

I plan on hitting the ball with either a 2k or 4k abby pad, depending on what it needs.  But no polish for it; the pearl gets it to go long enough for me.

I'm righty, stroker, 250-ish revs, 15-16mph at the deck, my PAP is 4.5 over by 3/8 up.

Once you put the pin near the PAP, the ball isn't going to go as long as it used to .....

I tend to put the pin in the 1.5" pin to PAP zone, as  way of splitting the distance. Not being a professional or very high average bowler, I, as many of us, am not as consistent as I'd like to think I am. So my PAP, my first track, is not always the same. So that "1.5" may wind up being 1/2" or 2" sometimes.

Just a margin of safety.

FYI I'd start with 4000 grit Abralon, on general principles.
(If you drill it 1" pin to PAP, it will want to flare AND roll very early 2000 grit Abralon will make it want to grab the lane early too.)
And the T-Road Pearl flares a lot. closer pin to PAP will reduce it but still want to roll early.

Good luck.

Very, very true.  The pin is going to transition to the axis very quickly and the ball isn't going to flare much.  Carry is very hard to come by when throwing a ball with the pin this close to the PAP.  It's going to be a very condition-specific piece if you choose to do this.  I used to have a Morich Awesome Revs with about a 2-2.5" pin to PAP layout (I got it for free from a friend and just plugged the thumb), and wow oh wow that ball rolled early.  Very early.  Light hits were guaranteed corner pins...

Yeah, I'm looking to make it condition specific to be honest.  I'm looking to make the piece blend sloppy patterns.  I'm bowling at Strathmore this winter, Jeff, and there are some pairs there that get really messed up really fast.  So as a way of combating this I want to have a piece that will just mosey along.  As it currently stands, I have my T-Road with about a 6 inch pin to PAP, and it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too over/under for me.

I also have in mind the local tournaments in NJ.  I usually can't make earlier squads, so I get the leftovers, haha.

Thanks for the heads up guys!  I appreciate the feedback.

Drill it Rico and you will be amazed out how you can blend the over/under. When I was still on Storm's Staff I drilled one Rico and was a great ball. Shot 5 300's and an 800 with it. Still had some of the pop the pearl gave you but it was controllable and a lot of energy at the pins.

I just put a Rico drilling in the new Kinetic Pearl and have thrown it about 10 games. Haven't shot below 246 with it.

RICO, eh?

Now, what exactly do pins well below the bridge do?  I've seen a few RICO balls on various bowlers, but since everybody's PAP is different, they all had varying length.  But the idea was exactly the same.

Guined, if you don't mind me asking, what is your PAP and revs and all that jazz?

Thanks!

Steve-
I messaged you a couple weeks ago about layouts for the Dimension and Gravity Shift.  The Gravity is garbage right now (surface is insanely sensitive) but the Dimension is SMOOOOTH.  I went with a slightly modified Rico.  Instead of pin in palm I moved it 1" up and kept everything else the same.  This gives me just shy of a 5" pin to PAP.  It is by far the smoothest rolling ball I have and will always have a place in my bag.  I drilled a Resurgence exactly like this last year.  The Dimension is a bit longer and has about the same backend move.  That might change as I use it more and get more games on it.  There's a vid of the Resurgence in my profile if you're curious to see how it rolled with that layout.

I hadn't thought about a Rico, just the options you outlined, but I think it's a damned fine idea. It does blend out tight oil patterns and still make the ball more generic than a pin close to PAP.

I retract my "bid" and now support a Rico as the candidate.

With your PAP, a Rico is going to give you a decent amount of total hook actually, but the low pin position and x-hole will give you a smooth motion off the breakpoint that is very continuous.  Adjust the surface to determine length, you'll probably want a little extra surface like 1000 or 2000 abralon to keep it smooth.  For a comparison, since we both are lower rev guys this is even more applicable, here's a video of me throwing my Storm Eraser Banshee (a much weaker pearl than the T-Road Pearl) with a Rico drill at 2000 abralon.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8Q6FUPhUGk  I was really coming around the ball and spinning it a little that day for some reason, so the ball was actually going longer than it should have, but you can still see how smooth and continuous the motion was on the backend.

That's butter Dan, woo.

Well, a monkey wrench just got tossed into my plans.  This is fun though, I promise.

I'm going tonight to drop off the T-Road Pearl to plug it.  I'm also getting a used Rival for free.  I'm going to plug and redrill that bad boy also.

Since I was just given a sweet piece, I'm going to RICO one of them, and then on the other one, I'll do something completely insane that I normally wouldn't do.

The guy who donated said Rival said I need to RICO the Rival, just because he wants me to, lol.  I'm thinking I'll do that, and then drill the T-Road with something like a 2 inch pin to PAP.  Smooth pieces, one sooner than the other.

Thoughts?  *bell ringing*  Round 2, begin!

Steve,

I'd watch a bunch of videos on the Rival before you Rico it, which I don't think is such a good idea. Britton's (VIDEOBALLREVIEWS) and Buddies' videos of the Rival and BTM's and BJI's reviews reveal this ball is already so even with normal drillings, it acts as if it had been Rico'd already.

I think it's s much better idea to Rico the T-pearl.

Please see some of those videos first.

Hrm.  It is a really smooth piece.  Probably too smooth for what I like, lol.  On second thought, maybe I don't want it.  I think I'll stick to a RICO T-Road.

On a side note, I'm sorry that your Gravity Shift isn't working out Raven.  I found the cover to be very very sensitive to coverstock changes also, but honestly, once I hit it with Resurrection and Snake Oil on a spinner, it was new again.  It actually smoothed out the over/under I sometimes saw OOB.  But if you don't like the OOB, then you won't like that surface prep, haha.  What surfaces have you tried it at so far?

My PAP is 5 1/8" over 3/8" up. Rev rate between 350 and 375 off of the C.A.T.S. System.

Now to clarify the Rico layout. Pin is in the center of the grip, CG will be at 45° from your PAP on a symetrical core ball. Place the balance hole 6 3/4" from the Pin through the CG. I prefer to use small deep hole than a large shallow hole.

I have used this layout on several balls and have found that it works better on balls that are stronger down lane than balls that are stronger up front. If you put this in a ball that is say heavy oil ball you might run into problems. So you take ball that will read early then you put a Rico in it and you have ball that is designed to roll early with a very early rolling layout and you most likely will have a marshmellow at the pocket.

Using a ball that has length and is strong off the spot will tmake it read better in the mids which is what you want but still retain the charateristics of the ball reaction. While eliminating some of the over/under that you can encounter. This will ultimately give you some more area on the lane to play with and open the pocket up for you.

This is what I have learned from the several balls I have put this layout in.

Good Luck
