1" pin
« on: July 31, 2008, 09:16:17 AM »
I got a NIB Secret Agent with a 1" pin. I am looking for a layout that I can use specifically for a 1" pin. Another words, I am looking for a layout that requires a very short pin that might be a good layout. This ball has 2.4oz top. My spec's are in my profile but basically, I am tweener, rev rate dominate with a 5.75" x 3/4 up PAP. My typical house conditions are more hooking for me and I start out playing 18 and away from the pattern.

With only 2.4oz of top weight, you have a lot of flexibility about where you put the pin.  Even putting the pin above the fingers should not be a problem as you'll still be able to get the ball statically legal.  If it had 3oz or more, then you might be limited to lower-pin layouts but not with 2.4oz I don't think it's going to be an issue.

Confirm the CG location and top weight but I don't see a problem.

You could try a 315° layout with it - but, if I remember correctly, it is only for balls with a significant mass bias, the symmetrical Agent core does notr fit that category and I am not sure if you can use th 315° layout on a ball like teh Agent. But from the specs, it would be an option.

I have had 2 symmetrical cored balls drilled with the 315* & loved them both. I had(still have) 1 asymmetrical drilled that way & I hate it. Just for information sake!

I like the 315 layout... might be interesting. I am also considering a Rico with the pin 1" under bridge.

Thanks for the idea's!

I personally wouldn't do a Rico layout on a ball with a short pin...you won't be able to utilize too big / deep of hole, which is part of what makes that layout work.

Well still depends on what you're looking for it to do.. You say it hooks at your house.. Do you mean low volume, shorter pattern, beat up heads or lanes, bone dry first 10 boards, or maybe it dries up real fast?
Is it even for that house that you want to use this ball at?

Just to get an idea of what you want..

Peace

SKC,

I simply am rev rate dominate. Just about all patterns play hooking for me here. I typically play 5 or more boards deeper than everyone.

Im so glad people are brainwashed to think that TRACK sucks. And its even funnier when im carrying with my TRACK ball and they're going flat ten with their BRUNSWICK ball.

Ended up drilling pin under bridge... cg straight under pin.  Very smooth reaction... reminds me of the 80's. I LIKE IT.

Thanks for all the input.

hi pin chaser, funny you ask about a 1" pin.  i have 2 balls with a 1" pin. 1.  ebonite gamebreaker
2.  brunswick fury.

1.  on the gamebreaker (i got it used and for the most part i used the existing layout) i have the pin above and just slightly to the right of my ring finger with the cg swung out about 45Degree or so and have a weight hole on the pap finger quadrant.  i had to drill my finger holes (gripless) a little deeper but the ball goes down and makes a pronounced left turn.  at first looking at the layout i didnt think i was gonna like it but now i love it.  im a stroker but can play a little bit inside if i have to and i know the gamebreaker will make the turn with this layout.   my pap is 5 1/4 right 5/8 up and throw bout 15+ mph and have decent revs but im not a cranker by any means.

2.  on the brusnwick fury, i had the pin below my fingers with the cg kicked out and didn't like the reaction, so i gave it another try and plugged and redrilled the ball with a slight variation of the gamebreaker layout and wow.  what a difference.  the ball went down and i knew it was gonna kick over.  now the ball is a lot more readable, the any adjustments you have to make will be easier.

both balls have a low top weight (2-2.5 oz), and they both have pretty decent size weight hole, and because of the layout, you may have to drill the fingers a little deeper but thats not too bad.

im glad i redrilled the fury.  i was getting ready to sell it.

i hope this helps.  i can get you a pic of the layout if that'll help.
