What does my PAP of 4 1/2 over and 1 up mean?
« on: January 31, 2007, 06:51:34 AM »
Am I a low tracker or high tracker or what?  Does it tell something about my axis tilt or rotation?  How can I use this information to help me when thinking about layouts and ball choice?

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

Which number determines that?

My PAP is 4 5/8 x 5/8 up and I track very close to my thumb.

Usually the first number is what determines how high or low your track is.  I'm around 6" over, and I have a very high track.

The first number indicates he's a med low tracker.  A high track would be 5 1/2+, a low track would be 3 1/2- (rough numbers, people's ideas vary on this).  The second number indicates that the track is closer to the thumb hole than to the finger holes.  The higher the positive number, the more the track angles away from the finger holes.  If the second number is negative, the track is closer to the finger holes than to the thumb hole (this is called an inverted track).  Neither number tells you anything about tilt or rotation.  To determine tilt, you need to measure the diameter of the track (see the two links below.  Note that in the second link, the chart says track circumference but it's actually track diameter.).  To determine rotation, mark the PAP on a non-flaring ball with a piece of white tape, throw it, and note where the PAP is.  If it's pointing straight back toward you, it's 90 degrees of rotation, if it's pointing straight toward the gutter, it's 0 degrees.  Estimate rotation between these two extremes.  --  JohnP

Thanks JohnP!  So, with a 4 5/8" over, I should be a med-low tracker?

Now that I have a quarter scale I guess I'll have to take another look at my measurements as I track fairly close to the thumb - can't put the pin any lower than equal with my fingers or I clip the thumb.  I followed BrunsNick's video, but since I didn't have a quarter scale, I used a flexible ruler and protractor - I guess my numbers could be off.

On some of my equipment I do.  My track usually starts just at the thumb hole.  I believe I'm about 1/2" up, so it's slightly further from my middle finger hole.  I'm about 5 3/4-6" over and about 1/2" up.  I'd have to call my driller to get the exact-ish numbers.

Re-did the measurements with my quarter scale and came up with 4 7/8 x 1/2 up.
That's using my Retro Resurrection.  My first track line is 1/2" from the thumb and almost 3/4" from my middle finger.  Pin is slightly above the fingers and to the right of ring.  CG is 3 inches to the right of grip center (on the center line) and x-hole is 1/2" past my PAP.
