What drillings would work best for these specs?
« on: May 18, 2008, 07:42:16 AM »
My wife finally moved up to 14 pounds from 12 pounds last week (she's a novice bowler who currently averages around 120). Since we weren't sure she would like it, I plugged up an old ball of mine as an experiment and just moved the thumb to match her span (in other words, the layout was originally drilled off my PAP, not hers) until we could see if she liked it.

Well, she likes it. The ball we used was a Roto Grip Silver Streak SE, and I resurfaced it to 2000 Abralon with no polish. Immediately, she has started rolling better games.

I expect she could top out around 150-160 at some point down the line. My wife is tall (5'11"+), long-limbed, with above-average strength for a female. She can hammer the ball down there, but wouldn't get any revs on it if she did. She's most comfortable right around 10-11 mph.

She's a low-track bowler, almost a spinner. PAP is 2 1/2 over 1/4 up.

On the SSSE, the pin was above the bridge and the CG under the ring and out, which worked out to roughly a 4.5 x 3.5 for me. With her PAP, the specs change to 3.5 x 1.25. She's doing well with this ball, but if I was going to drill it up from NIB I don't think I would necessarily put this pattern on it.

For a low-tracker, low-speed player with decent revs (she can turn the ball OK, it's just spinning, more or less), what are some optimum basic layouts/surface preps for her to use in the future? Right now, we're only worrying with two balls (her main ball plus a plastic spare).

That's an understatement. If she was any more of a spinner, her ball would be spinning like a top. For low tracks, placing the pin closer to it will help in getting the ball to read the lane earlier, usually giving the bowler more hook on the lane. A pin in ball may be best, but placing the hole in the correct position could be a chore. Using a pin out ball will make it easier to keep the ball legal and the statics kosher. Good luck with her ball. =:^D

Bowled with a guy about 5 years ago who had a PAP of 1/2 over 0 up with a rev rate of about 350. Booked 210-220 for years. One of the weirdest releases I've ever watched in person.
