Just thinking out loud -- what happens to ball reaction if you have someone, say, with a PAP of 3.5 over and you place the pin beyond 3.5 inches?
Jess

Nothing. If you go beyond 6 3/4 no matter what the PAP is you will reverse flare. I track fairly low, and ofter go beyond my PAP with my drillings.
-
I realized I might not have worded my original question clearly: I'm talking about pins placed beyond the VAL. Sorry for any confusion.

doesn't seem like much of anything, i've drilled this domination which is a pin 1 1/2 past the val, http://s238.photobucket.com/albums/ff192/The_Bowlers_Edge/layouts/?action=view¤t=P1010123.jpg like that, and both got down the lane, reved up really well and had a huge move in the backend, i had a break pearl that had the pin on the val and it was very similar in reaction as far as i could see

Thanks. By the way, what's going on with the next ball in that album, pic #20? The one with the Storm logo in the middle of the grip?

315 degree secret agent. cg is by the x hole.

For me it created reverse flare, almost turned me into a full roller.

What's the point in using that layout on a Secret Agent? This is a layout that only takes advantage of the strong PSA in asymmetric cores.

obviously not

I've seen some suggest 315 is a good way to take advantage of a 0-1" pin symmetric but I have never tried it. Is that true?

correct, the shorter the better, however the top weight the ball starts with is even more important than that, since you'll have to drill out the extra finger weight. I've used it on 3 balls, 1 asy, 2 sym, and the asm was HORRIBLE, the other 2 are 2 of the most even rolling/hook/controllable bowling balls i've ever used

That's what I was thinking about when I first mentioned pin beyond the VAL. I was wondering specifically if it would invert the flare.

Good. Next time I get a 0-1" in, I'm going to try this.

Of course they are... most short pinned symmetric balls exhibit those same characteristics!

the secret is not your .5-1 inch pin, its 2-3 as you can see in the pic. the frakazoid i had was the same as well, and the asymmetrical was the one that had the 1-2. BTW, i've had short pin bowling balls with "normal" layouts that didn't roll smooth and control, just early and like poo, and absolutely none with the continuos motion as the 315s. Have you ever even drilled one w/this layout for yourself? or just going off of other's information of what it is "supposed" to do?

If you use a symmetric ball all you're doing is moving the statics around allowing an x-hole to be placed in an unusual location... I still say, as have other who have done this layout, that it only makes sense to use a ball with a factory marked MB or one with an intermediate differential above .010. http://www.rollriteproshop.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=32&Itemid=33
You're so sure that this "trick" layout is special, but have you done any research to back your own claim up?
I'm done with this discussion here since it's completely off the topic of the original post.
IMHO these "trick" layouts are a dead end for the vast majority of bowlers out there...

A pin beyond the VAL will reverse flare. This is one method for creating a "leverage" layout for full-rollers when you have a longer pin ball. Place the pin 3 3/8" BEYOND their PAP... see page 10: http://www.amf300.com/drillSheets/AMFdrill.pdf
