Need help learning Drilling
« on: January 04, 2007, 07:04:13 PM »
I've only been bowling 1 year as of this month, so Im still new to the sport but Im a fairly decent bowler, 170 in my 2 leagues so far this season. I have medium speed usually 12-13 mph and average rev rate. Im a righty and I feel most comfortable when I can stand somewhere between 20-25 and set it down around 15 and send it out to about 7 or 8. While still growing and maturing as a bowler, I've begun to recently get more consistent with my release and hand positioning to where I'm creating my identity as a shooter, where as I used to change up my release a lot because I would forget how to keep my revs and so forth. The video of precisionproshop-steve throwing the domination is what I'm looking to be able to do. Thats a perfect example of how I like to play, but I may not be able to get it out as far as he did because I dont have quite as much hand but more so dont have the equiptment that can do that.

I'm in love with the skid-flip roll, so I'm looking for a good skip flip ball. So far, I've begun to take a liking to the Storm Domination and I think thats what I'll be going with here soon. As for the drilling of the ball. I would like to gain a further knowledge of all the terms that Im seeing used on the site such as Pap, RAD, Mass Biass. I've seen these terms used a lot but not sure of there meaning. Myabe if I know all the terms then I can make better decisisions as to how I want my balls drilled.

When I usually get my balls drilled, my driller just drills them very aggressive with the pin to the right of my ring finger and the CG underneath it. I've seen a lot of guys talking about the pin in other places like under the ring finger and such, and I'd like to learn about the differences in rolls and hook. I want to have a good knowledge of what I want in my next ball before I buy it! Thanks a lot of any help you can offer.

I know the post was long, sorry!

While you can get really specific according to your PAP, I usually go by a couple of standard rules.

1) Pin above fingers = more length, Pin below fingers = earlier roll

2) CG/MB kicked out away from center line = more hook/snappy backend...CG/MB moved in towards center line = less hook/more controlled backend...the more you have of each, the more pronounced that reaction will be.

The "aggressive" drill that you speak of is the most aggressive, but it is also not reccomended for people with higher rev rates as it can cause uncontrollable and unpredictable reactions.  It's also very susceptible to roll out in my experience.

As you get more "finickey" with your drilling patterns, you'll find what works best for you.  What I did was picked two favorite drill patterns, and stuck with those and only those.  From there on, you let the ball do the work.  Hope this helps.

All of the ball manufacturers' websites have useful information, usually in a tech area.  Also, check the site below in the Mario's Secrets area.  --  JohnP
