What is a Double Thumb?
« on: February 10, 2010, 11:41:53 PM »
I've been seeing a lot of people talk about this lately, but haven't seen anyone really describe what it's supposed to do.

Also, anyone have a link to pictures of what a ball with this layout looks like.

Thanks, just trying to learn.

Yeah, I saw that, it's what led me to create this thread. I was wondering if anyone has used the drilling and what they experienced.

Thanks, really thinking about giving this a try. Has anyone used this on a strong pearl? Thinking about finally giving Ebonite a second try and picking up a mission.

The double thumb layout will always have a 4" pin to PAP and VAL angle of 30°. The Drill angle will be different for different PAP coordinates. You have work backwards to find out what the drill angle will be.

The PSA will be 1 1/2" from the edge of the thumb hole and the PSA will be 1/2" from the edge of the thumb hole. You should always spin a ball on a Determinator to make sure of the location of the PSA. It's not always where it's marked. I have seen them miss marked by several inches.

The double thumb can really increase the mass property dynamics of a ball. When Wlater Ray won in Hammond last season he was throwing an Intense LevRG with a double thumb this ball has a Diff of .056 and Mo tested the ball after Walter won and it was over .100 after drilling.

So you can see how much effect a double thumb drilling can have on a ball.

David Lee,

Looking at the picture of your Virtual Gravity I would say that is not a double thumb drilling. Yes you have hole near your thumb but dynamically the Pin and PSA are not in the correct location.

I have several balls drilled with a balance hole on the gradeint line with the hole in the P3 location and it looks like it would be a double thumb but it is not.

As any ball, a double thumb drilling can be a powerful addition to your arsenal if used at the correct time.

I have a question on the whole always 4" pin-to-pap idea. In the instructions on the website it uses 4" as an example, but it also states that the recommended pin distance be between 3.5" to 5.5". So to me that would mean that you could use something in that range versus always 4". Just a question, I have a ball with a really long pin that I am going to have redrilled and this caught my interest...

The 3.5 to 5.5 is the suggested pin to CG distance. This is so you can get thumb weight in the ball after drilling so when you put the weight hole in it will stay within static legal.

Hopefully USBC will get smart and get rid the static weight rules and make life much easier for Manufacturers and Proshop operators.

Make sure you get your ball spun when it''s plugged, the PSA will be in a different location. A Determinator is the only way to find the PSA on a plugged ball.

Ah ok, that makes cents. I think I will try to get my ball driller to do this to my long pin Bounty. Might be like pulling teeth, but hey it's my money.
