Layout for conquering Shark...
« on: May 10, 2007, 05:39:25 AM »
Sounds like a ridiculous topic but I have a question.  Shark pattern typically gives me trouble when I have to play it from left of the 4th arrow and keep it tight inside.  I have no problems getting to the pocket(as a matter of fact, it's one of my favorite PBA patterns to play), but getting the 10 pin out is extremely hard to do on a consistant basis.  On this pattern I'll typically use an Absolute Inferno or a polished Particle assymetrical ball.  Getting the continuation on the inside line to get out the half/flat ten is a chore.  Without revving up too early or overskidding after the end of the pattern, what type of layouts would one suggest to drive just that much harder in the last 5-10 feet to get ten back?

I use a Carbide + with the pin under.  Gives me nice midlane roll...  When the break down a bit I like the Big Shot pin over my middle finge.

Are you talking for the fresh or the breakdown?

The breakdown Northface.  Usually in a PBA league setting or a tournament(with a bad crossing), you'll get guys that'll use balls that'll completely destroy the fronts and then push the oil down the lane.  Making it a mess after 20-30 minutes of bowling.

Oh yeah, guys I don't need midlane roll, that part isn't a problem, it's the continuation through the pindeck that is doing to get that pesky 10 and flat 8s out.  I'm thinking if I just use layouts that I like already for the pattern with a flare decreasing hole past the VAL then I can get that extra umph needed.  My only concern is the ball overflaring early.

Any help is appreciated.

Id look into a polished Strike Zone or a Classic Zone with some surface. Either pin down of course, psa 50-55 degrees perhaps.

I like pin up balls, over bridge or even farther from your axis point in the 5 1/4 to 5 3/4" away.  With these "weaker" drillings the ball retains all its energy through the fronts and gives you that quick snap on the backend.  You still need a lower grit for the surface 2000 grit down to 500, depending on backend strength, to get the ball started up.

With the Shark at 44' you only have 16 ft. of dry boards on the back.  With that little backend you want something that will react quickly to friction.  Pin down balls, while they might get to the hole, will no give you the maximum carry on longer patterns.

I like pin down drillings on shorter patterns because they have a longer transition time getting into a roll.

Of course there are exceptions based on house characteristics but pin up is the way to start.
