What should this drilling do? (pic)
« on: December 22, 2004, 09:31:06 AM »
My primetime sanded. Had it drilled to get through the heads but be strong later down the lane yet for medium to medium-heavy. Should this drilling do it?

It should in the most vague, and general terms have a strongish reaction, but you see

(RANT ON; don't read further if your ego is fragile and if you are easily offended -----)

the results depend on MANY more explicit factors such as,
- ball speed,
- actual oil pattern and amount,
- bowler's release specs: axis tilt, actual PAP, axis rotation,
- comparison is needed with balls you have already tried on this oil patterm and their surface and drilling.

(Sorry, but the position of the pin and CG/MB with respect to the finger and thumb holes MEANS NOTHING!! I don't mean to be harsh, especially if you're newbie who has done no research, but you really should do some. Pin and CG/MB positions are only of any significance when applied to the bowler's positive axis point, in light of their axis tilt, rotational axis and ball speed.)

(Rant off)

so, are you telling me that on most of these reviews of the balls on this site that state the drilling ( the pin placement, CG, MB, length or distance from CG, etc) otherwise have little meaning in determining the ball reaction without further details of the bowler him/herself?

Exactly. Say for instance someone has a ball with the pin over the ring and the cg in the palm, if another person has the same exact ball, drilled exactly the same, on the exact same oil pattern, and they have the exact same revs and speed, but different PAP's, the balls will react differently. Thats just a simple way to explain it though.

It is an Ebonite ball, just toss it in the trash now and save yourself the time.  J/K

I pretty much agree with BK said, it was a good explanation.

Yes, it means very little unless the drilling states
- pin-CG distance,
- Pin distance from PAP,
- CG or MB distance from PAP,
- pin height with respect to the midline
- bowler's speed
- surface change from out of box condition,
- fairly detailed oil pattern or at least a decent description via comparative reactions of other balls, including their same details.

"God is in the details". In bowling, that is not a metaphor or a joke.
