Offset Drilling Characteristics
« on: June 16, 2005, 03:11:48 AM »
Started experimenting with the so-called "Offset" or "Y-drilling" by having an old Wicked label drilled with fresh measurements.  The new pro-shop I'm using seemed to be proficient with taking the new measurements...

For the ones who missed the previous threads, the layout emphasizes the fact that your thumb does not naturally lay on a perpendicular midline from between the fingers.  Instead the thumb naturally seems to be "offset" anywhere from 1" to 2" inches.  There is discussion on whether "offset" is the correct term or whether the ringer finger is just shortened and pitches adjusted.  I don't really care about the terms.

Anyways, I used this ball in league last night for a game.  It initially came off the hand properly (reaction was excellent), but when I started to relax and get in rhythem, I started dropping the ball.  I finally had to back off and go to a non-offset ball to save the series.

Is it natural to drop the ball since the ball is no longer wedged onto the hand.  Would a span or pitch change be appropriate?  Maybe I just need to practice it some more.

I've decided to work a bit more on this poor Wicked before I convert the rest of my arsenal.

OK, let me understand this, I have been thinking of trying it, but I would like a better explanation than my brain has in it.

If I place the thumb say, closer to under middle finger, ( pitch/length we
ll skip for now) then it should come off the thumb sooner ?...easier?
One post above said shorten the ring finger ? wouldn't that actually lengthen the ring ? and shorten the middle ?

My brain can't picture this, but it's something I think might help, so I'm looking for simples...type slow...I read slow...

Simply put.

If everything else is left the same in the Tgrip and now one just shifts thumb laterally under the middle finger.

NOW one has lengthened ring finger and shortened middle...get it?

So most guys that do this instead set up T grip like usual.
Then raise middle finger slightly and lower ring finger slightly and thus preserve the previous spans from the Tgrip.

Then the decision to 1)enter the same thumb pitches as before on a line parallel to the T grip from the center of the now offset thumb OR (2)to orient the same thumb pitches to the line from center of thumb hole back to a line between bridge.

Different drillers do it different.

PS method 2 in all reality becomes a CLT(center line tranSFER).

You didn't say how much offset your thumb is or what the pitches are? Could just be the size of the thumbhole.

I'll need to get a copy of the new drillsheet for my records anyways.  I'll post it when I do.

I'll load up on tape (gradually, of course) and see how the release acts.

I'll also post whatever I find on how the track/PAP moves between the old and new drillings.
