What would you do?
« on: November 17, 2003, 12:34:14 AM »
I recently went to a clinic with Mo Pinel and Del Warren and they suggested that I had a span that was slightly too long. I have never had a problem with the fit and it always feels like a glove. I am no genius when it comes to layouts and drillings but have been trying to learn as much as I can lately. If I understood correctly Mo wanted me to shorten my span as well as lose the reverse pitch in my thumb to gain some tilt. I have a lower tilt, around 7-8 degrees.

A week or so after the clinic I had a ball drilled with these measurements and the suggested layout. The balls reaction when thrown correctly is really good, however I struggle throwing it consitantly, as I don't feel like I am "rolling the ball" smoothly. I know it will feel better after many practice games but right now the only way for me to consitantly toss it seems to be with my pinky tucked under. This wouldn't be a problem, but since I have been doing it with this span I have been having some pain run down my ring finger and into my wrist. I am thinking that I have stretched some tendons. I doesn't really hurt when my pinky is untucked so I am tossing my older equipment.

So to make a long Q & A session short:
1) Do shorter spans and less reverse= more tilt?

2) Is it just a mental thing that I am not rolling as smooth, or should it be non-factor once I toss it enough?

3) Has anyone else had this problem with the pain from the fingers down through the palm and wrist? If so, was it tendons? How long does it take to heal up?

4) Should I just get the ball re-slugged to my original specs, or close to?

Let me start by saying I attended the same clinic, the one I attended was in Akron a few weeks ago. Both Mo and Del are extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

Now, on to your shorter span. Just because they suggest you use a shorter span does not mean that the shorter span is the way for you to go. It is simply a suggestion. If you hurt your ring finger (knowing what I know about Mo suggesting drills) it is probably because he put too much forward pitch in your ring finger to add the axis tilt. That would somewhat stretch your ring finger a bit.

Mo suggested shortening my buddy's span from 4 3/4 (I had already shortened it to 4 3/4 from 5inches), to 4 7/16. No way could he throw the ball, he just kept dropping it. He has since junked that idea. I on the other hand loved the shorter span Mo suggested for me 2 months ago.

NOW----I think Mo is a genius in the tech and drilling fields of bowling, but let me say this: I had him measure a different friend's span 2 times in one day, and got 2 totally different suggestions. So take that for what it is worth.

So, if I am correct and Mo suggested a large amount of forward pitch in your ring finger, just try to plug the finger and move it to a little less forward pitch.

Thanks for the reply Excaliber. Small world, I actually went to the seminar in Vermillion, although I live in Cleveland. I bowled tonight and just frustrated myself. Using my old equipment, I just could not rev the ball what-so-ever as my hand feels weak. I just couldn't get any rotation and felt like I was bowling on a flood. After a while I loosened up a bit but still got pains in my hand when tossing my spare ball. Seemed like it hurt worse to come up the back of the ball than anything. Might as well kick the ball in the gutter if I left the 10 or 7 pins. Aggravating...193,189,245. I guess it is time to take some time off as I have to let this heal. I am the type to bowl 10-15 games after league is over if I bowl bowled bad and tonight I realized it wasn't going to do any good. I have the same feeling you do about Mo, and that type of span while it may be OK for some just hurt my hand, so I guess I won't keep trying to get used it. Oh well, any suggestions or answers to the other questions are greatly appreciated.
