Title: Will a grip change help this guy....
Post by: apocalyptic_rabbit on September 02, 2012, 05:35:55 PM
So I have a guy come to me wanting to get more reaction out of his equipment...

He is an extremely low rev rate and I have spent some time with him on the lanes, and we are starting to make some progress but his PAP is 6 7/8 over by 1/2 up his track run over his ring finger, and is about an inch right of his thumb.

Watching his release it almost. Seems like his fingers and thumb are releasing simultaneously.

I have his spans here:

MF <1/4 ^1/16.   Span: 4- 1/4.
RF >1/2 ^1/16  span: 4- 1/4
Thumb 31-32 5/16 reverse.

I know the problem is more physical then grip, but the more I can do quicker the more progress I can make in the physical department...

Any thoughts....

Sounds to me like he's grabbing the ball a lot and rotating the wrist hard. His ring finger is more dominant and thats why his track is so high. Thinking a 1/16 in the ring may not be enough or we can add some forward to the middle (if fingers permit). Work with him on relaxing his hand. Base fit him then try to add some rev to the ring and/or forward to the middle. Should bring his track down.

He used to play 5 pin (the Canadian small ball bowling) and lacks wrist strength his wrist is pretty well broken the whole swing... And appears to be pretty well straight up the back the whole way.

Sounds like almost a full roller.

Sounds like almost a full roller.

+1. If he's been taught that way then that 1 thing. You would have to teach him how to rotate the ball at the bottom of the swing. Thats if he wants to learn it.

The question becomes does he want to work to change to  a 3/4 roller, or make the best of what he is doing. Dedicated full roller drillings will help pull the track off the fingers (at least on the backend) and improve ball reaction.
