2 Pro Shops= 2 Different PAP's
« on: October 06, 2007, 01:34:05 AM »
I have two pro shops that have drilled balls for me this year.  Pro shop 1 says my pap is 4 5/8 over and 1/8 down.  Pro shop #2 says it is 5 1/2 over 1/4 up. I've noticed that I get more movement from the balls drilled by #2.  Should my ball reaction be affected in this way?

Are the two balls the same?  Are the conditions the same? Different equipment yields different results.

Can you clarify your original statement?  It makes it sound like you got two identical balls drilled by each shop and the second shop's drilling hooks more?

What ball did you have the PAP test done with?  Where and how did you throw it?

The numbers you show aren't terribly different and not a big concern unless you are a high level scratch tournament player.  If the two different shops put you in two different sets of pitches (get a 3rd shop to measure the other shop's drillings to see how close they are), you might actually be releasing them differently enough to change your PAP a bit.

The best way is to use a very low flaring ball and use your normal release on the oiliest part of the lane.  You need to find the first oil line closest to your fingers and thumb.  A slight scuff of the ball will help you see all of the oil rings.  Once you think you have the PAP measured, put a 1" square piece of the ball and throw it again.  Again, throw it in the oil with a tight line.  You're trying to see flare, not hook or strikes.  The tape should not move during the first 10-15' of the lane.  If it wobbles, you don't quite have it.  Someone behind you will have to watch.  Even low flaring balls can do their thing earlier than you might think.

Thanks I will try that.

The span and pitches are identical.

Did either (or both) of the shops take you out to the lanes and determine your PAP there?  If not, they're taking the information from the track on your ball, and that's just a fair estimate.  Determine your own PAP as Strider described, leave the tape on the PAP and have a driller give you the horizontal and vertical measurements.  In the future, give these to your driller and have him use them.  When you find a really good driller, he won't accept the measurements, he'll take you out to the lane and confirm them.  --  JohnP
