Wrong pitch/span?
« on: June 03, 2004, 05:35:17 AM »
Hello.

The last month or so (as the weather is getting warmer) I've been having a lot of trouble with blisters/sore spots on my thumb. Here is a picture showing roughly where the problem is (cant take a proper pic, it just comes out blury)

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/damien.brown/index/thumb.jpg
(Best pic I could showing that bit of the thumb )

Anyway. When I have the ball in my hand, the top of my thumb (near my hand) is pressing against one side of my thumb hole, which is forcing my thumb into the other side of the hole. (hope this isnt difficult to understand)

Im pretty sure im not gripping the ball.

I also saw a link someone posted a few weeks ago that described what was wrong with you grip if you had blisters on different parts of your hand. I couldn't see the area of my thumb mentioned though.

Soooo. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not working for me either.

EDIT:  Wait, now it's working.  Nice pic.

It works now... hmm

I had a blister before on the same spot. Mine was caused from a small span and pinching the thumbin the ball. My ball driller and dad fixed the problem.

Possibly a small span then. I'll have a chat with my driller, but I always get the impression that I shouldn't question his reasoning for drilling my ball the way he does.

Anyone else?

I'll have to agree with CS about the short span.  I had the same problem as you, and as he said, it turned out my span was too small.  So I'd look into that.

Right. I do have an oval thumb hole.

As far as I'm aware, I have zero pitch on my finger/thumb holes.

When I hold the ball by my side with my wrist cupped, the top inner side of my thumb (opposite side to the blister) presses against the ball, forcing the opposite side to rub.

Heres an actual pic of my thumb. Its a bit blurry.

Anything else I can do to help diagnose the problem?

btw. I will be going to see my driller at the end of the week.

Deeb,

Are you near Nottingham????

If so, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND heading to AMF Nottingham and the Rollrite ProShop/Mario Joseph.  Outstanding guy and great driller.  He was my driller for the 3 years I was in England and he is fantastic!

Hope this helps..

Im not too far from nottingham. Mario drilled my first ball about 2 years ago (conventional grip) but I started using a guy in Nuneaton because he was closer/easier to get to. I will try and make the trip to see Mario though.

Deeb,

If you make it up to Mario's and Rollrite, please tell him that Mike Louridas from the US sent you and please say hello to everyone there for me...(Mario, Niccola, Nick and all the gang).......and tell them I will see them in September for the Open...

Best of Luck!

Put a piece of vise or turbo patch tape in the area so can continue bowling without any harm to your thumb. When you get the thumb hole fix continue using
the patch tape on your thumb so you can protect the skin of your thumb. Would not harm your release but will improve your thumb release. Try it. I always use it on both sides of my thumb. My thumb hole is tight and with the tapes patches on both sides of my thumb I do not pinch or grip. Smooth and super fast thumb release. Takes care of the sweat and swelling of the thumb. Make the test.

Discuss with your driller but you may need a slight amount of more/less lateral pitch based on your side to side pressure.

I'm sorry I could not tell if the ball was facing forward or back when you were holding ball on side.  But in all reality you could tell which direction to make thumbhole in the same direction as your thumb natural angle.

Also Bevel properly applied can reduce the rubbing in this area.
Also a slight bevel knife or sandpaper application at this back rubbing area about 1/2 of the way down in the hole will dramatically reduce rubbing there.

I have same area of rub.  It is going down!
