Depth of finger holes
« on: May 03, 2008, 01:52:12 AM »
I've started doing something lately in an effort to keep from jamming my fingers too far into the holes. I'm only drilling about 5/8" deep - just far enough to get my finger in to the proper depth.  Seems to work well.  The question is, isn't this how balls were drilled a long time ago?  I seem to remember my first fingertip ball being done this way.

I was concerned about finger weight problems with this, but so far so good.

as long as the static weights are good, no problems with it at all....just remember when ordering your equipt. to possibly not go more than 3 oz topweight....just to keep the drillings easier.

Yes back in the day before they had these technical cores and coverstocks they only drilled the finger holes about 3/4 on an inch to 1 inch deep, enough just to get your fingers in. I have no clue as to why they did this, but if i had to guess, it might have been because there were no static weights to worry about, and they were probably more concerned with not removing weight from the ball since they needed all of the 16lbs in a bowling ball to strike.

I used to do this for about 10 years.Same reason,to keep from going too deep.I quit doing it when I realized I got the same result with an even better feeling by starting with a tighter than normal hole and then ovaling it out so the fingers fit perfectly.Just like you stuck your fingers in a piece of clay!If you look at your fingers, they are bigger near the joint than they are at the tip.You can use this fact to make the finger hole self limiting by creating a sort of "funnel" shaped hole. This all didn't matter anymore when about 5 years ago I went with inserts using the "flex" system similar to Vacuu Grips.

Yep.....My first finger-tip balls were drilled like that. Didn't have finger grips back then either. Finger Grips may be when they started drilling deeper, I don't know that for fact though.

I've drilled some of mine as shallow as 3/4. I just cut the bottom of the grips off. I only do it to control static weights on certain drills.

Yes, that's the way all of mine were drilled before the use of grips. All my equipment is currently drilled the same even with grips. Consistent depth for fingers is just as important as anything else in my opinion. I like to bottom out in the holes then I know it's the same every time.
