Can anyone explain the reaction I'm getting?
« on: September 30, 2017, 06:18:22 PM »
I have a solid asymmetric "oiler" and I cant explain the ball reaction I'm seeing.  I went with what should be a stronger layout for me of 45 x 4 x 40 and was expecting and early and rolly motion.  What I've been seeing is more of the opposite.  The ball doesn't want to pick up the lane and has a fairly defined motion off the friction.  Not skid snap but it sure isn't being early and rolly.

At first, I was thinking I wasn't giving the ball enough oil.  I don't believe that is true though as I've had the chance to throw the ball on a higher volume shot since and didn't see much of a change.  I have also taken it to 1000, and it reads and roles more like I was expecting with that surface (OOB is 3K I believe)  I would rather not use that much surface though if I don't have to...

As far as bowling goes, my physical stats are nothing special.  About 16 mph off the hand, 300 ish rpm (maybe 350 on a good day) 45 degrees (ish) of rotation, 15 degrees of tilt.

Any thoughts on why I might be seeing the reaction I'm seeing?  Any input is appreciated!

New ball and if not has it always done this?  Might need a bake or resurface as a first off my head suggestion if not new.

The ball is new and in production today.  I have 20 games on it (guessing).  I've tried a much surface as 1000 and gone all the way up to polish.

Not a secret, just didn't share because I didn't want to come off as calling the ball bad.  It's a Jackal Ghost.  I just want to better understand what I'm seeing and learn a little.

Just checking, but are you and your driller sure about your PAP? Has it been checked lately?

I corrected a span issue before drilling the ball, so I do suppose it could have shifted.

This isn't an apples to apples comparison, but I have a GB2 MVP with the same pin distance and val angle (and a balance hole but near my axis) and it does behave as anticipated (early ad rolly).  My though was if the MVP roles like expected with the given pin distance that my PAP couldn't have shifted much.  Maybe that is a flawed line of thinking?

I will re-check my PAP though.  Certainly wont hurt anything.

40 isn't all that high of a VAL so maybe a 70 would have been more to your liking. Maybe a P3 hole but would discuss more in depth with your PSO.
Current Rotation:
PhysiX
Code X
Code Black
Axiom Pearl
Phaze III
Trend
IQ Tour

While our PAP changes over time, and with span and pitch changes, most changes are not dramatic. With a combination of release  and span/pitch changes, it can change as much as 1"; usually changes of 1/2" CAN require drilling changes to maintain ball reaction. I do emphasize "can"; for some people, it makes no difference until the change is 1" or more.

As I said, it was just a thought, in case you and/or your driller hadn't thought of it.

There is no ball that will hook in oil.  Every ball needs to find adequate friction before it can change direction.  Although some stronger covers will start to read the mid-lane, they will not, nor can they change direction until they find adequate friction.

Asyms are also usually going to be firmer off friction.  Ghost is also fairly flippy from what I've seen.  You have to get something that really chugs like a Mako or a No Rules Exist to smooth that reaction out more.

I checked my PAP this evening and it's the same as it was.  4.75 x .75

I think the plan is to choose a more appropriate layout for the ball because I get a very over under reaction at the moment.  Now to pick the correct layout.....   Probably 45 x 5 x 75 but I'm open to suggestions if you have them.

Thanks for the input thus far!
