Misfit pearl question
« on: April 14, 2013, 09:22:08 PM »
I am looking for some suggestions that can help me with my new Misfit. I bought it to go below my Maurader for when the lanes start to dry u but the problem is that it is going almost straight. I want to try some different surfaces first before I re-drill a brand new ball. I think it is due to the fact that it was drilled pin above middle finger.

It's probably not just the drilling, but it certainly didn't help. Supposedly this ball is for very dry lanes; so it needs to see a lot of dry to make the turn. If you're speed dominant or not seeing a lot of dry, it may not have been the safest choice to buy.

I'd leave the drilling and start by putting some surface on the ball. Start with at least 4000 grit pad and water. If necessary, then go down to 2000 or 3000 grit. I wouldn't go too rough initially because because you want some length.

Have one and tried it at a demo day first.

At the demo with the usual pin above bridge layout the MP was too angular for my comfort zone.  Pretty much matching what I had heard from others up to that point.

Weeks later I punched up one with a pin to PAP distance about 1.25" stronger than the demo layout.

Oops!

I sort of flubbed the layout an ended up with a larger pin to VAL angle and ended up with a fairly smooth look on house shots.  I've tweaked the surface to an E pad with polish and on the lanes used by a 5 man scratch league it's still clean enough to be useful.   More angular as well.

On that condition it's roughly 5 boards weaker than my green and white Misfit.

The ball is 500, rough buff, high gloss out of the box. Maybe try refinishing the same without the high gloss. Or you could do as charlest said and start at 4000 with no polish and go down from there.

I throw two handed and the ball still needs friction to hook. However, given too much friction it will snap hard and keep going. I have mine at 4000 with polish for maximum length and it's become my benchmark ball on a house shot. But as I said, I still need to find some friction. I've seen this ball slide right down the lane if I go through the heavier oil at the wrong angle. I like using it because it allows me to play a bit straighter with more control. Shot my best game and series with it a couple of weeks ago. Love the ball.

I agree with the previous posts that the yellow misfit pearl needs friction to work properly. If there is medium to heavy oil, the ball might skid too far down the lane. Also, I would agree with putting a 4000 surface on it to see if it reacts better. Or even go to 2000. Good luck with the ball.

If we knew your PAP and an approximate speed, that would tell if its the layout.  But definitely a +1 to what charlest said.  Surface on alot of these balls make them come alive.  Start with a fresh 4000 and go down from there till you get the right reaction.  Keep us posted.

Thanks for all of the replies, I have my own spinner at home so I can do the adjustments myself. I tried just rough buff and no high gloss, but I haven't thrown it yet. I just was wanting to hear some input on maybe what had worked for others. May be there was just more oil than I thought when I switched to it from my Maurauder. Thanks again

Are we talking about the Yellow Misfit?

Its designed for dry lanes so why use it for something other?

Right now - I am having trouble keeping my ball on the lane when its dry and its drilled left handed... Forgot to say I use only 2 fingers -- lol --  This left hand drill is throwing the weight off so we are going to need something else to get the ball down..

I have miine drill with the Pin 1" from my axis.  On dry to med dry conditions  this layout makes me move 6 boards right of my normal starting point.  the ball still has enough back end to continue through the 8 pin.
