In later games or more friction surfaces, bowlers went to adding more axis rotation to get the ball to recover from open angles. Sometimes it worked or it took bowlers out of their comfort zone. What a great addiction.  For medium to high volumes, the cover and core will provide an all-purpose (benchmark) response. Mine was bored up to 40x5 1/4x35. My ball travels at a mere 15 mph with a 398 rev rate. When the layout was new, it allowed me to play farther right and down the lane since I did not notice an overreaction when the ball encountered friction.
