3 balls
« on: October 05, 2003, 06:10:13 PM »
In the aftermath of the "heavy oil" post from Friday and some of the subtle hints that came out from Phil.....I was thinking....

Hey D/T fans,....

If you primarily saw heavy/med-heavy thru medium and some medium lights,....couldn't you have a 3 ball arsenal from D/T ?

The 'new' ball coming out that Phil hinted about
The Thing
Barrage

thoughts??

2 DT balls will handle medium-light thru medium-heavy (for most people): the Thing and the Element, only because they are so versatile. Add the Barrage and you have balls to cover 99% of what you'll see in any tournaments and leagues.
(They're *roughly* equivalent to Solid-X solid, Silver Streak and Top Fuel in RG's arsenal, but the Barrage is a much better looking ball than the
Solid-X .))

Jeff are you thinking about switching from Roto to Dyno?   Maybe Phil will send you a free ball to test to get you to switch, especially after how nice you were to him in the heavy oil post.   har har...

No Mojo...I'm not....I was just curious.  3 companies really have my attention....As you mentioned / know, I love and have all Roto Grip stuff, but Dynothane and Visionary are very interesting to me....

A free ball from Phil to try ?!?!?!?  Yeah,....right !  We're cool....he understood, and I understand he was kidding.....I'd love to try stuff from any company....but a hack like me getting a ball to try......yeah, right !

Here is my take on all this, if anyone cares.  Yes, you can make a pretty reasonable arsenal of Dynothane balls.  Dryish conditions: Barrage.  Light mediums, HIGHLY POLISHED Vendetta.  Mediums with clean backends, Thing.  Heavy mediums and carrydown: Element.  Wet-dry: Vendetta Black.  Heavier Oil or mediums with minimal backends: Vendetta Particle.

It would be very easy to have a complete arsenal of strike balls (for 99% of what most of us face) with only three of these.  Here are the three ball combinations I would suggest.

If you prefer arc-y equipment:
Barrage
Vendetta Black
Vendetta Particle

If you prefer snappier stuff
Polished Barrage
Vendetta
Polished Element

To cover almost all of what you will see most completely
Barrage
Lightly Polished Thing
Element in box condition

New guy,

I'm curious as to how/why you decide to drill your balls the
way you described(in terms of layout).

Also, going back to 'you launch balls to fill the gaps', where
do you think the biggest gap is at the moment in the D/T range?

Biggest piece missing is the low rg high flare ball.

Isn't that the ELement? Quoted from the website:
Radius of Gyration: Low @ 2.540
Differential: High @ 0.058
OR do you mean low like RG=2.45?

I'd love to see the Soaker cover on a Barrage type ball. I use mine a bit and the cover is wearing much more than the amount of use would indicate. I am worried.

Thank you New Guy.

I think your layout method makes a lot of sense and I shall try it on mine.
Love the fact that you take time to get involved in this forum area, answering
all sort of different questions(sensible ones!!). I think you are doing a fantastic job at D/T and I love every ball launched since your arrival. (OK, perhaps I only LIKE my Vendetta Particle)

Can't wait for more info on the low rg high diff.....Thing?

Hey New Guy, what about solid purple for this new ball?(same shade of purple as used on The Thing Returns)

THe Barrage cover is wearing because of the lack of oil on the lane. It is designed for hooking conditions and the wear is the results of the lack of oil. The cover and the core match so it works. If we changed the cover than it would not be the same ball.

Low rg and high flare is what I thought we were missing. Flare of .06 plus and rg of 2.5 and lower.

TheBarrage cover and core work together veyr well, indeed!
I didn't mean to put the Thing's Soaker cover on the Barrage core, but to add the Soaker "chemistry" to the Barrage cover or a Barrage-like (read: very mild) cover.

I think I'd like to see what those core specs (<2.5 Rg and >.060 RG Differential) do in the Thing's cover.
