Title: 9.5 inch pin.... tekneek, HELP!!
Post by: vilecanards on January 24, 2007, 04:27:33 PM
I received a pro-pin Centrifugal Mass, 16lb., 2.40 oz. top-weight.... and the pin is 9.5 inches from the CG marking!!! It is 3.25 inches PAST the CAP mark. I guess I was looking for something along the lines of 5" - 7", but 9.5" is fully 1/3 of the way around the ball! I have not yet had this ball checked by my driller to determine the accuracy of these markings, and I'm almost afraid that he will be stumped by this one. Now, the CM has an assymetrical core and I am a high-tracker, high-speed bowler. Any layout suggestions for 38' of medium to medium-heavy oil on synthetic lanes? I don't have a TON of revs so I am most comfortable going down-and-in, almost a corner shot ala Norm Duke. I WOULD, however, like to be able to play a deep inside line across the middle, that had some snap/hard-arc on the back-end. Since this is likely the only ball I'll ever see with a 9-inch-pin, I wouldn't mind making it a condition-specific ball.
Everything else in my arsenal is drilled so that I can play anywhere on the right side, but would have trouble playing DEEP due to my lack of revs. Looking for HELP with this one!!! Any ideas Tekneek/Steve?

When in doubt... Scale the ball to double check the CG location.  Also, if possible, find a shop with a Determinator and have them spin it up to double check the location of the MB.

Like J_Mac said, weigh it to make sure of the CG location.  If that really is it, just flip the ball upside down.  Measure 13.5" from the pin through the CG, call that the anti-pin, and use it like you would use a normal pin.  The MB stays the same, only now you've got a ball with a 4" anti-pin instead of a 9.5" pin.

yeah, shelley is correct. with this core, that will place the flip block on the "top" (anti-pin) of the ball instead of the bottom...which i don't believe will make a ton of difference...correct me if i'm wrong

Hmmm and inverted core on a CM...that would be a really nice midlane ball with some good control depending on the drilling / surface finish.

Steve, Shelley, JMac, and Other Guy (sorry if I missed anybody that responded)... thanks for the EXCELLENT INFO! Now that I have wrapped my mind around the information, it makes perfect sense! I will print out this info for when I take the ball to my driller.... just in case!

I was trying to come up with a name for that spot and remembered Visionary's anti-MB.  To find the true MB for drilling, you mark the spot 13.5" away and use that as the MB.  I'm hardly the first person to think of it, but I haven't seen anyone else call it the anti-pin.

But with such a freaky long pin distance your idea is marvelous!

Cause a flipped/ upside down core could get a very interesting reaction!
And of course solve that problem of drilling something "useful"...

ok... here in Germany most pins are shorter than 3" so I guess I won't run into that problem... but I'll keep the idea... who knows
