ABS Heels: ILLEGAL?
« on: June 17, 2003, 05:32:45 PM »
Interesting story,

I was bowling last night in a summer pba challenge league where there are some senior pba bowlers and some other regional players, and it was brought to my attention by one of the senior bowlers that my ABS Tour Ultra shoes were causing him a problem.  Apparently he claims my slide sole which was the one with the dimples like a golf ball, was leaving a sticky residue on the approach which was making him stick.  This sticking went on all night.  He told me that if this were a pba tourney I would have to remove my shoes since they were causing him problems.

WHAT IS THE REAL RULE ON THIS?

I find it hard to believe that shoes registered, and approved by the pba, abc would be illegal and subject to ejection if a bowler claims they are leaving something on the approaches.

Just to note, this is one of those guys that always complains and has trouble with the approaches.  I told him it was not my shoes that was causing him problems but his poor footwork and balance at the line.

Just my 2 cents.

I use the same heal as you do and have had no problems.
Just a note. If you were leaving a residue on the approach you would stick too the next time you bowled on that lane.

However.... if it were proven that your shoes were leaving a residue behind, they indeed would be illegal if he petitioned you.

The rule from bowl.com:

Rule 12. The application of any foreign substance on any part of the approach that detracts from the possibility of other players having normal conditions is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, such substances as talcum powder, pumice and resin on shoes; also soft rubber soles or heels that rub off on.

Sorry my friend, I would be extra sure that you in fact aren't leaving anything behind.

But how do you prove that?

Would I be sliding in my own mess each time noticiing it?  And the other guys on my pair had no complaints.  Just one guy.

Sounds like he's on an island to me.

Unfortnately, all he has to do is protest to the president of the league who would make the call.
