Weekend Bowling...
« on: December 28, 2003, 08:23:06 PM »
Here's a little review of a scratch tournament that I bowled this weekend. I'll try and give you guys my insights on conditions, equipment, scoring etc..let me know if ya want me (or any of us to do this ), after every tournament, and or event. I think it's fun to go back and review what ya did.
This was in Dallas, a doubles tournament called Big Daddy Doubles, it's a over 40-under 40 entry with only one PBA member on a team. We bowled 10 games, skipping one pair to the right after each game. There were over 60 team entries,..some of the big names were Chris Barnes, Del Ballard, David Ozio, Dino Castillo, DJ Archer, and lots of local talent...other guy bowled too
Lane conditions were a little strange,..I was told they put out the "house" shot but tweaked it a little,...the oil was shortened 5-6 feet and the heads were double ran...now here's the real kicker, and I've never seen this before. The tournament director let all the bowlers practice for one hour before starting...can you imagine what we did to those lanes in an hour...we could practice on any pair,..moving from one end to the other....
When we started the condition still seemed playable,..we still had some oil up front and the backends were still responsive,..I started with my Anomaly, playing a nice swing shot about 16 to 8,..first 2 games were in the 220s..in games 3-8 the ball or balls( I used about 5 different balls) never did the same thing,...each lane developed it's own personality,...bowlers were playing everywhere,..the boomers were going coast to coast, and all the rest were anywhere in between...it was a nightmare. Later we found out that the tournament director in his evilish way of thinking let us all practice for an hour to keep the scores down a little...It worked. Lanes became extremely difficult,...the middles and the heads went away and every one was just trying to survive...I finally went into playing 25 to 15 with a polished Crisis, and just trying to touch the headpin on the right side,..finished with 233 and 257 for a stellar 10 game total of +65.  My partner,DJ,and I finished at +215, and that was with him shooting a 300 in game 4,...about 50 pins out of cashing and 65 pins out of the final stairstep....this was fun,..tough but fun. and frustrating....jimensminger.

Did you have a chance to bowl on the Valdez the day before?  It was almost like watching the petersen or something...props to Danny on the finish he had to pull out the win in the Wicks event.

As to what y'all had...I can only imagine how chopped up it was because of what I knew ours was like (and we had the benefit of the extra five feet of oil).  Ours at least remained playable most of the day since there aren't many women that are knocking dust off the caps in the first game

Michelle,..no I missed that, we were still wrapping up Xmas in East Tx,..but isn't if funny how much we take for granted when the oil "is in the right place", I heard that Del shot a 250+ game and got a standing O...wow. I did hear the horror stories of the stone 5-8-10s..etc. What a great tournament,..and eye opening experience for all. jimensminger
