Thing Vs Thing Returns?
« on: January 14, 2004, 07:44:55 AM »
I am wondering is to how well these two match up to each other? Far as length, hit and carry? I am getting the Thing drilled up this weekend, I am looking into purchasing the Thing Returns soon. Just want to know if there will be any overlap in these two? I know drilling and the finish can make a diffrence. Any info will be great?

Thanks a bunch,

Craig

Craig, you'll ge a lot of responses on this, however, from what I know, the Thing Returns was made and marketed as the perfect complement to the Thing.

Personally, I would want them to overlap just barely though...

I think you could get away with drilling the Returns like the Thing and they'd complement each other great...........

I have found that these two work quite differently.  For my hand, the Thing Returns covers the same number of boards as the Thing and handles carrydown just as well (I keep both in box condition).  The Thing is a smoother ball and needs more oil to get through the heads and midlanes cleanly.  It also wants something more of a "bounce" area -- either very sharp backends or a relatively hard wet-dry block -- than does the Thing Returns.  However, the Thing Returns is angular and can be aggressive on the backend, so if you want maximum forgiveness to the pocket, the Thing is probably going to be your choice.  I find that for most conditions, the Thing Returns matches up better, in the sense that by holding more of its energy to the backend, it allows me to carry more and score better, while the Thing provides me some room where the lanes are overblocked or dished out.

In recent tournaments I've started with the Thing on fresher oil, this is a great ball for that. During the day, especially when I have to bowl 2 split qualifying blocks, as soon as I get into the 3 rd arrow with the Thing, I switch to the Thing Returns...easier through the heads that are starting to go, a little more length, and more energy stored to corner from the deeper line..simple.

Guys thanks for all the replies very helpful. I am thinking of drilling them both at 3 3/8, Do you think that they will be to aggressively drilled to handle most conditions?

I have both the Thing and the TR drilled basically the same way, I have the pins over the bridge, and the cg just to the right of the ring finger slightly above the midline span. The Thing has a 6"hole on the midline to get the sideweight back to legal, and I put a hole on the pap of the TR to tone down the jump on the back a little...
