coverstock of the Thing
« on: December 05, 2003, 10:00:04 AM »
Several month ago new guy said that the red of the thing is solid and the teal is pearl.

Does it means that the red is the soaker and the teal is not?

When drilling, should it take into consideration?

Please explain someone to me.

The Thing is a red/teal, solid/pearl mix and both are the soaker cover stock. I drilled mine like any reactive ball. The soaker coverstock works great and the ball keeps a consistent level of performance. I've had mine since they were released and haven't noticed any fall off in reaction.

The DT Element is also a mixture of solid and pearl, as is the Hammer Turbo Diesel, the Brunswick SmashR, and the Morich Hercules. I am sure there are others.

Why would you think you'd have to take that into consideration when drilling?????

I think it was the Hex; the Hextreme, if I am not mistaken, used an old AMF core from the Hawk that Del Warren brought with him to Track from AMF.

I think he may be worried that it it's mostly red (solid), he might want to drill it weaker than if it were mostly teal (pearl)?  That was my concern at first.  Like Dynoman and Charlest said, go with your favorite drilling.  My Thing has become my benchmark ball.

Apparently the soaker characteristics are spread evenly between the solid and pearl "parts".  A search would probably give a better answer, but pearlization is a process done at the factory where a substance (mica is common) is mixed with the coverstock to give certain qualities.  Pearls will go longer and snap harder off the dry compared to a solid, even a very shiny one.  Pearls also tend to be less porous so they soak up less oil.

Added on edit, good description of pearlization.  Set your preferences back a year to see all the replies.

The core in the Hextreme is the same as the Night Hawk Revenge/En Fuego. Hercules coverstock is a mix of solid/pearl particle, not reactive. Great ball though, just added a weight hold on mine to get a more consistent roll out of it and the ball works much much better now.

We weren't talkign about  cores, but -
Yes, but, the Revenge was a particle pearl that came 1000 grit matte finish (still got 2 of them). The En Fuego was the same as the Hawk, but different color; both were SuperFlex solid. All three did have the same core, the core in the Hextreme.

But my point was they are all a mixture of solid and pearl, which, you must admit, is a very unusal mixture. I know the Hercules is particle.
