The AU79.

Many of you Dyno Thane Forum regulars will recall me saying that I did not have the same opinion of the Anomaly being an oil ball that many of you did. I needed to have fresh backends in order to have any success with it.

Now that I brought back that thought pattern, I had alot of success with the THING and I liked the reaction on the Element even though I did not throw it very much. Considering the AU79 has virtually the same core and is made for that big backend reaction I am thinking about picking one up.

I think with that core and the combo coverstock this ball could be a real winner! I have a few questions though.....To those of you that have thrown the Element and the AU79 what kind of difference did you see? If you have thrown the Element and THING and AU79 what kind of differences did you see? I am thinking that the AU79 should be slightly stronger on the backend than the THING, but naturally I am not sure.

I went through a few Elements.  They were very arcy for me.  Very heavy rolling.  Too much for what I encounter.  When I polished them, I would get a skid/jerk reaction.  It seemed to riccochet off the dry... with almost no transition.  As if it hit bumpers in the gutter.  hehe

Honestly, overall I did not have success with the Element.  

But the Au79 is another story.  Granted I only have one of them and the ball has the pin on the negative side of my grip ('bout an inch down from my middle finger with CG an inch and half on the positive).  But this ball was a much more readable roll than I expected.  This layout made sure I cleared the heads fine and turned aggressively without being too hard.  

I played down the boards with this ball, which I normally cannot do.  That was the layout letting me do that.  I have to get another one drilled up but I'm not going to go far from this layout.  I like it's reaction.

Here's my take with both balls with the same layout with out-of-box surface...  the Element will read midlane more and still have a pretty big backend.  The Au79 will be able to start left of the other and flip more angular.  I am guessing they will cover a similar amount of boards, maybe the Element slightly more due to the surface and the fact that it will start it's move earlier.

The difference will be similar to that of the Thing and Thing Returns.   Just a thought.

I would think that the Elements would be a good 1-2 punch for leagues...much as the Things..however, I'm not sure you'd want to mix both series too much,...one of each maybe, but not more, you'd see too much overlap.

For example, an Element and TR would be good...or a Thing and an Au79, but not a mixture of them all.  Does that make sense ?

I have been considering getting an Au to fit between my TR with pin about an inch over the ring and cg kicked in towards grip center, and my Roto Res with the pin 1/2 under my ring, and cg kicked out slightly towards pap. I guess to me, with the right layout, I thought I could get a pretty wide coverage out of this trio. Does THAT make any sense? Remember, this is to cover Sport and tourney conditions, not just house shots.

As far as layouts go, what might I consider to fit between the two balls mentioned above?

Maybe I'm old-school but these "overlap" Q and A's crack me up. Every ball has a different reaction for every player... I can play the same line with at least 4 or 5 different balls, Is that over lap..?
What exactly is over-lap,..is it good or bad,..how do I know if I have over-lap,..do I care..?

There's more to bowling than just changing balls. I can use any number of balls on a fresh THS, and play in the same place with all of them,..is that over-lap,..NO,..it's choosing the ball that best suits that condition. I have several balls that "overlap" but they all fit in my selection process...What I'm trying to say here is that ball characteristics determine carry,..that's what we all want is CARRY..sometimes when my Blk/Red Ven won't carry,..from the same place my Thing Returns will. My Black Ven and my Thing can both be played from the same place,..sometimes one carries better than the other, OVERLAP is not a bad thing, 2 balls with different characteristics produce different results even when played from the same place. It's knowing when to use which one,..or a lucky guess,...don't get hung up on OVERLAP,..I don't think that there's any 2 balls in the D/T line-up that are designed to do exactly the same thing,...but there's quite a few that can be played from the same place on the lane with varied results, that's the beauty of the selection process...I try not to think in terms of OVERLAP,..but what might be the best ball for what condition...I don't have any balls that overlap,..but I do have a good selection of what I can use on each condition.jim

Jeff, I know where ya coming from and that's cool, what's bugging me is scattered all over these boards are those stupid, overlap and comparison Q and A's...drives me to drinking,..and that's ok, sometimes,...but every ball will react different for every bowler on every lane on every condition...etc..etc..I could go bass fishin with 3 lures and one rod, and may have the greatest day of my life,..or maybe not. In bowling it's knowledge vs. them stinking lanes,...that's what we try to do, get smart, so we can use the right "lure" on the lanes...I have 3 Au79s, all drilled different...duh, may be a little overlap there ya think,..but each one gives me a slightly different look, which in my case may be the difference between winning a tournament and finishing second...
Bowlers in general need a small assortment of balls that will let them play the basic lines and angles conductive to scoring,..that I agree to,..but it doesn't hurt to have more than one ball that gives you the same basic look,...many a time I switched balls, stayed right in the same place and carried, where as before I couldn't move the ten pin...
I avoid comparison and overlap questions cause I don't have the answers,..you can compare the specs, and the reviews,..but the rest is up to the bowler..jim

The average house bowler tends to look for overlap where it seems the more avid tournament guy looks for hook shape variables for carry. Jim it just depends on what level your at.

lefty...good anology. I understand that the average league bowler (alb) probably does't have the amount of equipment that a PBA guy would have,..and where he would want his equipment selection to be stair-stepped to give him different looks on condition changes. This is probably what most alb's are looking for in their inquiries,...my observation on their Q and A's is that without knowing all of their specific variables it's hard for us on the forum to make recommendations for what balls fit where for them. My suggestion to these alb's is to read all the reviews,..watch others use the different balls (if possible) in their centers, and hopefully be able to trust in the knowledge of their local pro shop...usually the shotgun responses to their questions only adds to the confusion..jim
